Presbyterian Academy mission statement, is this stuff legal?

My wife has decided to take a job at the "Spring Branch Presbyterian Academy" here in Houston which is basically a day care center. Here are a couple lines from their "Mission Statement."

"Our mission at Spring Branch Presbyterian Academy is to provide a Christian environment for children in the greater Houston area. We strive to provide a loving, safe haven for children of all backgrounds."

Does the above statement contradict itself?

Then in the "Employee Information" it states:

"Spring Branch Presbyterian Academy will employ any qualified person, regardless of race, color, sex, or national origin. (skip a couple lines about age and education requirements) Because of the nature o our Academy, all employees must be comfortable with teaching Bible truths and Christian values." (in italics for emphasis).

"any qualified person" as long as they believe in their particular god?

Amongst the long list of serious offenses that can lead to termination "Conduct away from work does not up hold [sic] the general philosophy of the Church/Academy."

Like being married to an atheist?

They also mention that they do not pay into Texas unemployment insurance since they are a religious organization.

I would like to get some opinions from all sides.

I can see your point, in one sentence explaining they only provide a "christian environment" then saying all are welcome. I would imagine a Taliban day care mission statement would have similar verbage.

What I don't understand, if they charge for their services, and I suspect that they do, they must make a profit, how are they exempt from paying into what other employers pay?

Hey, you must of chose to reside in the bible belt, better you than me.

Tonight I said a little prayer that the soldier killed in Iraq today wasn't my brother. My views haven't changed since the day I knew this war was going to happen. This war is wrong and the best way to support the troops is not put them in 100 year long wars, but have them home with their loved ones.

It's legal, and most is standard to any such organization (such as the "conduct negatively affecting our public reputation" clause).

The religious requirements are certainly common to Christian-based services (schools, day care, summer camps, etc.) and not in any way self-contradictory.

Your illogical rewording of the "any qualified person" paragraph certainly expresses your views but does not reflect the accuracy or clarity of the statement quoted. A more accurate summation:

"We will hire any qualified person without giving preference to any of the characteristics listed. However, employees must be comfortable teaching Christian values."

Of course it is legal. They state that they are a religious run day care. What do you think they would say? There is no contradiction. We have religious freedom in this country. No one is forcing your wife to work there, no one is forcing the children to attend. Some people don't know what freedom is any more.

As a Christian i would not leave my child there because they may hire an Atheist to teach the bible?

That is like asking a cat to baby sit your pet gold fish, bird or mouse.

"Does the above statement contradict itself?"

No, you @$$hole. Just because someone believes differently than you doesn't mean they're ogres who will try to hurt children.
