The 800m is a difficult race. You need the right mixture of endurance and speed. Speed, is more important. If you have a great closing 200m then save yourself for those last 200m. However, don’t fall too far behind or you will never catch the leaders.

The first lap is all about conserving your energy. Don’t get too caught up with positioning. As long as you don’t fall too far back you should never use your “kick” during the first lap. The second lap, you need to become very aware of your surroundings. Positioning becomes more important. With 600m to go, you should be running faster than the first lap and within striking distance of the leaders. At 200m to go, you need to be using our kick. Your effort level needs to be very high, but still under control. At 100m, you give it all you’ve got. Kick with everything you’ve got!

This strategy is very common among 800m runners. The more you talk with other 800m specialist the more insight you will have about the race. Of course we all have your own tricks and variations on the above strategy. Good luck with the 800m!

The 800 is an all-out sprint. Run as fast as you possibly can and deal with the pain later.
