Is it unprofessional to use a client as a professional reference?

I work for company "ABC" which offers IT services to company "XYZ". I work closely, on a daily basis with employees of XYZ, but technically they are my client. Would it be unprofessional to use an employee of XYZ as a professional reference?

    Hi Jo Han,

Yes you can use an employee of "XYZ" as a professional reference but before doing so do contact that person at "XYZ" and request him/her to give a reference on your behalf. That would be professionalism on your part. Otherwise, you will come across as a person with fake references.

Only if you don't ask the person if you can use them as a reference.
