Do you believe any of these myths about atheism?

I ran across an article today that brought up and dismantled several damaging myths that people believe about atheism. Which, if any, reflect assumptions that you have or had about atheism and atheists, and does the article help to explain why they aren't true? Here's the link:

Update:

@ Ra and Yori: The "atheism is a belief" meme is founded on the mistaken assumption that one has to affirm a belief that no gods exist in order to be an atheist. That's not the case. An atheist need only be unable to affirm a belief that any gods *do* exist. That's a meaningful distinction, and one that gets lost when people try to twist atheism around into something that it isn't. Skepticism or failure to accept a claim is the default position, and only when a person is persuaded of a the accuracy of a belief do they incorporate it into their worldview. An atheist is simply someone who has not incorporated theistic belief into their worldview.

Atheism is a rational conclusion based on the burden of proof and the fact theists have not met this burden.

It's a very simple, defensible conclusion. Since it's hard to argue, opponents result to making up myths about atheism to attack instead.

If you can't argue the facts, but feel a need to argue, change the facts or sidetrack the issue. It's a common tactic.

There is crazies on both sides of the fence. From a logical point of view many of the stories just don't make sense. Religions say one thing and archeological diggings have turned just the opposite

People don't look at every side yet make a decision on what someone says. . Many stories are only documented in the bible and nowhere else. You can't make a decision based on half the evidence

Most people don't even know who or why a person has formed a religion

The great reformer himself Martin Luther says this

God does not work salvation for fictitious sinners. Be a sinner and sin vigorously.... Do not for a moment imagine that this life is the abiding place of justice; sin must be committed.

Sin cannot tear you away from him [Christ], even though you commit adultery a hundred times a day and commit as many murders.

    Rev Jerry Falwell says this

Good Christians, like slaves and soldiers, ask no questions.

Most people are intimidated ted by religious leaders ex I studied Mormons from top to bottom Their leaders say members can't question authority even if their wrong, Bet me and it goes on and on. I have a female friend that was raised Mormon she how I feel. I'm also in love wit a girl that was raised Catholic she knows how i feel. Quit lumping everyone in one pot i do my own thinking, looking and deciding what I believe or don't believe and it would take many pages to write t down which no one would read anyway. People claim to read the bible they pick and chose what to believe.

Source(s): I could care less what you believe but don't tell me what's going to happen if I don't follow you.

I disagree with #5...atheism IS just another form of faith. You'd like to believe and have others believe, that you are just standing back and coolly calculating the existence of God. But the reality is that you are making a statement "There is no God", when in fact you do not know.

That explains the high level of emotional investment that so many Atheists have regarding their belief. You never see an agnostic get upset or become so aggressive in a debate about religion, agnostics rarely discuss religion because to them it is a waste of time...arguing an unknowable subject is nothing more than a mental exercise like pushing against a brick wall.

oftentimes, people who espouse those lies approximately atheists are no longer something yet ignorant bigots (or only basic ignorant for the fewer offensive of the statements). some are so deeply brainwashed they could't see any way that somebody could desire to easily no longer have self assurance of their contemporary delusion. that's extremely a snort. thankfully, the widespread public of first rate, truthful theists understand those statements are nonsense.

The Tea Party are actually more unpopular than atheists? Wow, poor them.

No, I don't swallow any of those ideas about atheists.

Nor the apparent one that we all have degrees in the biological sciences and in cosmology.

I personally don't, but I think I've seen all 10 of those on R&S at some point or another.

The "atheists are not another type of faith" is only partially true. He doesn't really argue the point. He just changes it a bit, and then argues it. The point is, that atheists believe in no god, without proof (Yes, I realize that there can never be proof, but that doesn't mean that you have proof in no god). Belief without proof is still a type of religion. So, he was mostly right, but that point is still debatable.

That's an AWESOME article, thanks. I'm not an atheist, I'm a Deist, and while I DO believe in God I DON'T believe in religion, or that God plays ANY role in our lives what so ever.

Being an atheist, I really didn't have any misconceptions about me :)

But thanks for the link -- it's kinda nice to know that Tea Partyers are more hated in America than I am now. Yippee! :)

    Peace.
