my car sputters really bad, stalls, and wont start unless i let it sit for awhile?

i have a 1989 jeep cherokee pioneer, it will start up and be sputtering kinda bad, and after awhile of driving it will stall sometimes. it wont start back up after it stalls but i have to let it sit for awhile. what is causing this?

    it could be your cat converter is blocked up.that would cause the hot exhaust to back up in to the engine, which would cause it to sputter and then stall after the engine runs for a while.check and see if the exhaust is flowing well out of the tail pipe.this is a good easy starting point although there could be many reasons for this problem.

    Full fylter full line full pump but I don't think so if you can start it it may be the trasamision not a likly senario also you may have a stuck head or mabe it's just that worn out but an engen can last a lot longer than that

    Sounds like you air/fuel mixture is off. there can be many causes to this. Is there any black smoke? Also you can pull the plugs to tell if its running too rich or lean. Compare the plugs to an online photo galery of fouled plugs and their causes.

    Fuel filter clogged or fuel pump dying would be my guess.

    Source(s): Fuel pump just died on my truck last week and did what you are saying is happening (except mine didn't stall while driving, it just died all together).
