How much do you pay for your child's marial arts classes?

I was thinking of putting my son in 'Kempo' which is offered at a studio around the corner from where we live in Toronto, but the fee is approx $900 for a year ($80ish/month). That includes a 'back to school' special where they supply the uniform and the first month is $25. Another school I called charges $80/month and the uniform is extra.

Does this sound extraordinary? My jaw dropped because I was expecting $300 - $400/year.

How many classes per week for each belt level? If they only offer one or two, yes that's expensive. If they offer four or more, it's a good price - if the school itself is good. Some schools are just belt mills.

    You need to ask:

How many classes are offered per week?

Is one-on-one extra? Some schools will give several free one-on-one if you have a six month to one year contract.

    Is the uniform extra?

How fast can a student earn each belt? The answer should be, "When they are ready, no matter how long it takes."

How long to black belt? (four-plus years and not until fourteen or fifteen).

    What other events are there?

Most importantly, you need to observe several classes. How do the instructors interact with the students and each other? Are the instructors respectful to the students? Do the students enjoy being there? Lots of parents insist kids take martial arts. A good school will not teach a child who doesn't want to be there. Do the instructors have discussions with the kids about responsibility, nutrition, etc? Does the school pressure the kids to "bring in a friend" to try to get more students?

    All the best.

In my experience, that is about standard depending on what you choose. I've paid anywhere from $75 - $115 (per month) for my kids. The private classes they took went from anywhere between $200 - $400. I live outside of Vancouver. I found the more higher end the teachers and facilities, the higher the price. Make sure you get your money out of the program. There are a lot of martial arts teachers out there that do not know the first thing about martial arts.

I used to do Tae-Kwon-Do for years. The uniform was about €50. To grade for your next belt was €40 and you also had to pay extra if you attended any seminars. And it cost about €50 a month. There were also added expenses when we traveled and such. We went to Scotland regularly for tournaments. I live in Ireland, the fees go up the more you train (You have extra sessions before Gradings & Tournaments). Oh and body gear (Knee pads, chest pads, head gear, gum shield) cost about €100 and as I grew I'd have to get bigger sizes.

Source(s): Martial arts is expensive, but it's worth it. It's enjoyable and also teaches you some moves that could save your life. I'm a 13 year old girl and I can floor a 6'4 Seventeen year old in 6 seconds....How many 13 year old girls can do that? Very little...All my friends would find the uniforms unfashionable and they might actually break a nail! Like OMG WTF?? :) <3...Or whatever they say No, you get my point. Martial arts is great, I Think so many people could benefit from it. I would search around some more. Try other types of martial arts.

More important is what is being offered rather than what it costs. Many of these schools are cash cows that do little more than teach kids a type of calisthenics rather than self-defense. Sometimes it appears as if all the instructors are champions and have never been defeated.

That's about right. The best deal I found was for $75/Month, unlimited classes per week. As you can imagine, the liability insurance for martial arts schools is through the roof.

    Do *not* sign a contract.
