Jack Stack BBQ in Martin City (a KC suburb) can't be beat for BBQ. Now this is a nice restaurant, not one of the slide on the floor greasy BBQ joints. It is a chain in KC now, but years ago started out as the Smokestack on 71 highway. Eventually the owner passed away and the Martin City restaurant and the 71 highway restaurant went to different family members. Jack Stack now has a location in Overland Park Kansas as well, but I prefer the original. This is good ole KC BBQ, sweet sauce and all.
If you like more of a vinegar type BBQ sauce, there is Arthur Bryants on 12th St, but I am not a fan of this particular BBQ although some swear by it. Another local favorite is Gates and Sons BBQ, which has several different locations, but I think their qualify has fallen over the years. There are tons of little mom and pop BBQ joints in KC, but you take your chances when you go to them.
Food Network (Guy Fierty) did an episode on KC BBQ at one point and did not even touch on the really good BBQ places I mentioned above. He went on and on about a couple of places so I decided to go check them out (Food Network - so the places had to be good, right). They were not worth my trip, just ok, nothing special
I suggest that you try Jack Stack BBQ first and then you know what really good KC BBQ is about.
