Are the ideologies of Marxism and the Ayn Rand inspired "Free Market" eerily similar?
Both suppose that the dynamics of the economy should supersede the relevancy of the individual. Marxism subscribes to the theory of the collective having the ability to dispose of the individual for being a threat to the system. Whereas the latter ideology proposes that individuals that have no economic value should be allowed to perish as unnecessary and parasitic to the system. Both hold organized religion to be a threat, which makes the embrace of Ayn Rand by the "Christian" right absurd to me. Both have an innate cruelty at their core, and both give license to their followers to demonize and vilify anyone with a differing view. Human compassion seems to be the missing ingredient. Sorry, this probably belongs in a different section. If anyone would like to suggest one, (except sarcastic suggestions like the Garbage section) I'd appreciate it.
7 AnswersPhilosophy10 years agoIs there something wrong here, or am I just too old?
Halftime at a high school basketball game. Middle school dancers perform a dance routine to Rhinana's S&M that simulates a strip club. At first I thought that I might be mistaken about my perception. But then the finale of monopoly money being tossed in the air, a la "making it rain", verified my fears.
I have no idea what in the hell has happened to people's judgment. Y...ou think one of the parents would have said something, but the routine ended with cheers as I walked out in complete disgust.
Have we come to the point where it's acceptable for young girls to be trained for a life of objectification?
Yeah, yeah, I know I'm old, but come on! I want my granddaughters to be valued for more than shaking their butts. Thankfully their parents wouldn't allow them to participate in such a thing, and for that I'm grateful. I guess I did something right. But I worry about the future.

Why is it that the same Right Wing "Christian" Conservatives that profess not to believe in Darwinian Evolution (natural selection) are the same ones preaching a social policy that holds Survival of the Fittest at its core?
8 AnswersPolitics10 years agoIs it a form of theism to think we are the consciousness of the Universe? Even if it is viewed as an accident?
We are a product of the Universe, and it can imagine itself only through the Human mind - supposing no other intelligent life exists - can it be argued that we are the Universe looking at itself?
Just a thought I remember hearing once. I think it was Carl Sagan.

Maybe this is better asked in the geology section, but I wonder if any theories have pointed in this direction

I haven't read of a difinitive theory as to why the ring exists
5 AnswersEarth Sciences & Geology1 decade agoThere seems to be a rare planetary alignment occurring in 2012, is that enough to tilt the earths axis?
I've been very dismissive of 2012 Doom scenarios, but recently I saw a program concerning Jupiter's gravitational pull on Mars - and how our moon was responsible for keeping our rotation and axis relatively stable. Is there any chance the alignement of the planets in 2012 will have enough gravitational impact to tilt the Earth?
18 AnswersAstronomy & Space1 decade agoIs "My" America gone?
When I was young it was the middle of the civil rights struggle. My formative years saw riots and young people shot down for protesting. But through it all I had a sense that my government was reasonable, that there was a sense of civil discourse, even in the midst of ugly brutality. In school we were taught civic responsibility and participation, as well as the need to listen and respect other points of view. All of the Presidents; Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, even Nixon, though ideologically opposed, seemed to be reasonable men giving weight to both sides of the argument.
Now I see an America where the President, though willing to hear the voices of opposition and work with them, is vilified as a terrorist and illegal alien. this worries me to no end. What has become to civility? To a moral code that says "I disagree with what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it"? To respect for the office of President of these United States? To disagreement without vilification?
To question the legitimacy of a President that was elected by a popular and electoral majority sounds like the beginnings of a civil war.
Maybe America is too weak to survive with it's democracy intact, and if so, please let me know so that I may mourn for the ideal that was never realized.
12 AnswersPolitics1 decade agoIs there something inherently weak about individuals that claim superiority because of their residency?
Texans for example. I have never heard such false bravado as the cowboy-wannabe's that inhabit that state.
Must really have low self-esteem to claim manhood because of your geographic location.

Love thy Neighbor as you love thyself
Love thine enemies
How you treat the least of you is also how you treat me
Do you follow the teachings of Christ, or have you twisted them to satisfy your selfishness as the hypocrites Christ pointed out as being not of God - but of men?
