Did I perhaps , in my grief , word my question incorrectly?

I recently asked a question about bringing our troops home and replacing them with punks off the street. I did not mean to offend any military member. I hold you all in high esteem.I guess what I should have said was "is it time to reinstate the draft b/c too many of our military are being sent over there too many times." I know some of you are used to it and take it in stride.I applaud you. Honestly. I did not mean to make such a controversy. However, I don't need Coastie Mom or anyone else telling me basically, where to go. I had a brief moment of grief. I am human. SO to our military, I apologize b/c I never meant to compare you to gang bangers. To anyone else that thinks I need your education-forget it. I have been there long enough to know for myself. But in every other war that we have had the draft , who gets drafted? Not the rich college kids. All I meant was that I see these thugs as a drain on our society and maybe they could go through basic training as many times as it takes to make them have what it takes to serve our country, rather than drain it. thank you. NO disrespect intended.

Update:

I am now sorry that I ever brought this up. You all have a right to your own opinion, as do I.So will you be happier if I just say that I don't care anymore, or more importantly, do you, in your fight for freedom, want me to suppress my feelings so that you can call me a communist? get over yourself. I admire and respect our military and to hear it from you, I'm a goofy, nonsensical communist who doesn't understand anyone else's dealings with this war. I give up. You almost make me want to stop caring. what a sad commentary. peace out. I'm done.

Update 2:

@ Mdot- thank you for your explanation. I do see where you are coming from and can appreciate your message. Thank you for your service. Good luck to you.

Having an all volunteer military is our greatest strength. Im sure you have heard many times the saying that Soldier's do not fight for politicians, they fight for their brothers and sisters to their left and right. As a leader, the hardest soldier for me to motivate is the one that does not want to be here. To just take a person off the street and tell them they now have to fight because they are not doing something productive with their life would cause a lot more issues than it would solve. Not to mention it would go against many of the principles of the constitution that we fight to defend. I do understand the idea that you should not enjoy a freedom you are not willing to fight to defend, but initiating a draft just to prove that point is a bad idea. And no ma'am, you did not offend me with your comparison

I heard some recruiters on the radio the other day - and they said that a voluntary military is actually cheaper than the draft.

As long as they get people who volunteer - they have no reason to institute a draft. It even saves them money, and gets more motivated soldiers, who will do a better job, and be safer than they would be if they depended on thugs who didn't want to be there.

There are many countries that have compulsory military service - and that may be a good thing for many young people who don't learn respect or discipline at home. We don't have that - and perhaps we should.

As the USA, we are less tolerant of programs that force people to do things that they don't want to do - and as a large country, we can afford to rely on volunteers, rather than conscripting everyone for two years when they turn 18.

Regarding the young punks "maybe they could go through basic training as many times as it takes to make them have what it takes ..."

That, ma'am, wreaks of communism, or perhaps at least fascism. And flies in the face of freedom that many of us serve to protect and value.

Honestly though, the drafting of "punks" in the past only went on to demostrate that you just can't force the a55hole out of a guy who is h3ll-bent on being an a55hole. No amount of basic training (and taxpayer money spent/wasted on that punk's training) is gonna change him

We have an all-volunteer military. And our military is effective in large part because of the many folks who want to be there.

Bribing back the is a horrible idea it's not needed and it would get many people who want to live a non-military life killed for what so brave men who want to serve bravley can go home? It's the grief talking not you, it's ok just take it easy please.

till i became into approximately 15, I used the word "large" incorrectly. i presumed it meant you have been an exception, or an outcast. Ex: That little boy is rather large; no one will play with him.

didn't see your post that illicited the remarks but there was a movie many years ago about just such a unit, of hard core prisoners who were trained as a unit to fight WWII in Germany, I think the name was Dirty Dozen, with Lee Marvin, good movie, and very inciteful
