Vets' Opinions on Prey Model?

We're starting to transition into a PMR diet, the dogs have been getting RMB for months though. But I'm kind of dreading telling the vet. I'm thinking about telling them I feed some random dog food, so I don't have to hear it.

My vets are fully against raw feeding like the stereotypical veterinarian.

Any other raw feeders having these issues? What do/did you do when your vets gave you crap about it?

Just out of curiosity. My vet always asks what I feed before giving an exam.

Thanks everyone!

I don't blame him for being concerned as an unbalanced homemade diet can be very damaging and vets have to deal with the consequences. But instead of being against raw he really should educate himself and in-turn educate others on how to do a raw diet correctly. Just assure him you are doing the research to make sure you are feeding a well balanced diet, not leaving anything out. Really your vet shouldn't make you feel like you have to hide things from them, its counterproductive. I recommend finding a vet that approves of raw feeding. Mine does, so they are out there.

I tell them the proof is standing in front of them & they have no come back as my dog have no skin issues, not fat or skinny, good teeth(that I don't brush or get scaled)even on my oldies, lush coats & no other health issues. I don't feed a full raw diet but pretty close, only thing is a have quality dry bits available at all times but have to say a bag last a long time around here.

I feed raw/whole prey to both cats and ferrets. I've also run across vets who hit the roof when they find out. I simply let them know it is NOT open to discussion. If there is too much of a hassle over it, find another vet!

And for those who are coming out with the typical nonsense about raw- DO SOME RESEARCH ABOUT CARNIVORES!!!

What on earth do you think they ate prior to kibbles being invented just over 50 years ago, lol!

You asked this question a year ago. Authority vs. Blue Buffalo. Which do you use? I use Authority and my dog LOVES IT! My dog is a pit lab mix and was not suppose to get over 40 pounds. He is 62 pounds and still growing. He has been on Authority since he was 7 weeks old. His teeth are gorgeous, skin is healthy, coat is very shiny, extreme muscle, high energy. I have never had a problem with Authority. I have even had people switch from Nutro and Eukanuba. My friends chocolate lab was on Nutro, he skin was dry, losing hair and when I told her about Authority she tried it and fell in love. Her dogs hair grew back, and his skin wasnt dry after 2 weeks. I really love the price as well.

Your vet needs to know exactly what you feed your dog. This is important for your dog's health. Unless you are ashamed of what you are feeding your dogs, tell the vet.

Just say you feed meats and bones. Don't mention raw. Let them assume you cook the meats. And see if you can find a holistic vet that promotes raw.

I've fed raw in the past, which certainly raised my vets' (a group of 4) eyebrows, but they've learned by now not to debate me in certain matters. I wouldn't lie to them, you have no reason to. You have valid reasons for your choices, and these are YOUR dogs. Most vets push Science Diet, so if they want to question your choice in diet for your dogs, feel free to question theirs.

you must be completely host with your vet! Just tell them how you feel about feeding your dog raw food!

Those vets, what do they know.

I just save my money and do not go to them.

After all 8 years of school and years in practice.

It just makes no sense to heed my vets advice.

I just follow friends and random strangers advice on the internet and

experiment and feed my dogs whatever they tell me

Here is a great website with what I found helpful information.

    http://www.woodhavenlabs.com/barf-myth.html

No more vets for me, just advice and information from folks on the internet with no

scientific or educational background in nutrition.

Oh the money I will save!
