first year university adivce?

okay so I'm in my first year of university and it's only been 2 weeks. I registered for some nursing courses because that's what I thought I wanted to go into, but now I've changed my mind. I want to take some higher science courses because the science courses required for nursing don't go as deep into it.

However it's already been two weeks and a lot of the courses are three times a week, which means I've missed six lectures already.

I want to drop the nursing courses but if I do I won't have many left (only chemistry and physics for this term. I changed my courses accordingly for the next term).

So basically my problem is dropping courses is no problem, but it's risky to sign up for new courses this late into the term, I don't know if I should do it or not.

does anybody who has gone through university have any advice?

I feel like if I drop courses and don't register for new ones my first term will be so empty and unproductive.

Update:

the annoying thing is the biology course I'm currently taking is an equivalent to bio 40s I took in high school. I have no idea what I was thinking when I signed up for that. it's on the course list for nursing so I just registered. I wasn't even sure about nursing, I felt pressured to pick something.

but now I just want to do biology, I've always loved bio class. the higher bio class is a prerequisite for some courses in pre-veterinary second year. which is also something i'm interested in. but some guy was passing out tutoring flyers outside the classroom saying that that particular class has a 50% fail rate. so now I'm scared to sign up late.

I suppose I'll keep the introduction to nursing course, and drop the other one. and drop bio as well...

i'm sorry this isn't really helpful to my question. I just need to vent.

Well, you probably won't go into deeper science courses (e.g. biochem, ochem, molecular bio, metabolomics, etc) until at least your late 2nd or 3rd year. It's all intro stuff right now.

It's risky to register for classes 2 weeks in, but if you're willing to study and catch up and are able to get notes from someone, then you could. I knew people who have done it, and I myself have done it, but just for one course...and I ended up getting 12% automatically docked off my final grade because I was unable to makeup hw and missed absences.

Since this is your first quarter/semester in university, I suggest you just stick it out. Who knows, maybe you'll gain some interest in those classes again. If you're planning on going into nursing, aren't you required to take those courses? Or did you change your mind about going into nursing.

Where I attend, I can find out who my instructor is before I take the class... I would find out who it is and get into contact with them before you actually sign up. See what they have to say about your late arrival or if they would be willing to help you catch up. I have rarely seen instructors nice enough to help you catch up but you might have better luck at your school.

Even if you change classes you will still be behind. Might want to talk to the counselor. Sometimes we all have to take classes we don't want and a lot of are uninteresting to our major.
