Should we give in to 'Travellers' (Why are they called travellers?

Just think, you could build what you want where you want, with no compliance with with building or planning regulations, live off the state without paying anything in, drive as you want, treat animals as you want (have you ever been to Appleby horse fair? - sickening.) , cause as much trouble as you want, and leave any rubbish anywhere you wanted. You would be able to do anything you wanted, safe in the knowledge that at the first sign of anyone trying to stop you 'rent a crowd' would rush to build the barricades, after all they are professional protesters, paid for by the likes of me, who just want to protest for the sake of it. Makes you wonder who the mugs are.

I have no problem with travellers or gypsies and have always been friendly towards them when they stay for a few weeks each year near where i live .If they want to travel that is fine ,if they want to settle that is fine also. What they have to do though is obey the law, they can buy as much land as they like but if they are not granted planning permission then like everybody else they cannot build on that land .I don't see this as being racist in anyway ,that law applies to everyone.

We all know that there are sections on the community that would protest against travellers and gypsies being allowed to settle near them and that is racist. My own council wanted to build a travellers site near me ,personally I thought it a good idea but the bigots protested and got their way ,now the council have come up with a schemme backed by big business for a sewage farm or some other waste disposal . Had the small minded but loud voiced people shut up we would have had a nice council run site for travellers and gypsies that would have been no trouble to anyone .

    re: Dale Farm Eviction

I've got nothing against travellers at all but the law is the law. They are quick enough to use it when it suits them but when it doesn't they kick up a fuss. The majority of them have been offered somewhere else to live (which they shouldn't be entitled to) but it's not good enough for them. They expect to be given land for nothing then sit there on their arses not contributing to society at all. They want to be left alone to themselves but when needed they are asking us 'country' people for help. You can't have it both ways. Like I said, I got nothing against the travelling community whatsoever but the don't make it easy for us to support them.

I cannot understand how the Irish Travellers can claim civil rights in Grat Britain

They are basically saying they ought to be able to ignore laws and regulations that apply to everyone else, because of their claimed ethnicity. But to demand special treatment on the grounds of race or culture is surely racist in itself?
