What counts as a suicidal thought?

Wait, before you just scoff at this question and call me stupid, hear me out.

If you wish for death but wouldn't kill yourself, does that count? What if you would kill yourself, but there's something holding you back, just one thing that seems insignificant to others but it's the one thing keeping you alive? (ie, music)

Does it only count if you plan it out in your mind, think of the least painful methods, think about what to put in a suicide note?

Does it count if you wish for death every time you're alone with your thoughts, but morally/physically can't kill yourself? Are there some guidelines that therapists and doctors use to tell if you're depressed and suicidal or just an angsty teen?

Update:

Hah, I can never communicate to people. Not even aiming at the right target... Anyway, I didn't ask you to talk me out of suicide. I'm not going to kill myself. I have my reasons, and none of them can be communicated over the internet for a couple of YA points. I wondered what counts as a suicidal thought:

Do you have to have intentions of killing yourself, or does dreaming and wishing for death count?

Update 2:

Oh, I'm a girl by the way. You might be surprised how many people make that mistake. I live to see what I can do, and I live because if I killed myself I'd lose respect from... certain people. I can't tell anyone. My mom would be too distressed; she usually unloads all of her problems on me... Whatever. I just can't tell people.

Anything along the lines of wishing you were gone or verbalizing it are suicidal thoughts. Suicidal thoughts become actions when one begins to plan their suicide or even attempt it.

    What Counts As Suicidal Thoughts

Just wishing for death isn't suicidal, but when you start thinking about how to do it, those are suicidal thoughts. Now, if you know you won't do it, whatever your reason, you could say you're not suicidal but that you do think about it.

But this is more than angst. This is dangerous, because the time could come when you're so depressed or in despair that the death wish overrides your morals or the one thing you live for.Say you have some kind of major disappointment in the thing you live for, and now it's not there for you any more...

I strongly recommend you do tell someone and get some help. Maybe counseling will do it, maybe you need an anti-depressant.

Meanwhile, when you're alone, instead of wallowing in those thoughts, try thinking other thoughts, like planning a life for yourself after your graduate high school. If the alternative is nothing, then you're not risking anything by deciding on exactly what you want to do and going for it. You don't have to go to college and prepare for a future. You can bum around the world.

Or renounce life but live it by becoming a monk or a volunteer in the Peace Corps or something so you're helping others, doing good, making your life count for something, even if you get very little satisfaction out of it. You can do good now in your spare time so you're not alone thinking about dying.

I've had a rough life but I'm not the only one. Thinking/ planning does count as suicidal. Even if you don't do it at all. I once felt suicidal but then I realized I wasn't living life to its full expectations. So I tried in school, made better friends and now I am happy. Religion can be optional but I find that I've been a bit happier praying and going to church.

'suicidal thought' is like ANY thought at all that has anything remotely to do with killing yourself. its pretty simple. xD

its a thought that includes something remotely suicidal. i know what you mean though, i think about it a lot although id NEVER seriously consider it.
