Contextual Influences? Please help me with this english lit. question!?
I have an English assignment on a poem (Soeur Louise de la Misericorde) and I really need help with question:
"Some critics argue that it is essential to understand a poem's author to appreciate the poem.
Using your knowledge of how CONTEXTUAL INFLUENCES can shape a poet's thoughts and feelings, discuss the poet's choice of PROTAGONISTS and SUBJECT MATTER."
(10 marks= Demonstrate understanding of the significance and influence of the contexts in which literary texts are written)
I really don't understand it therefore I don't know how to answer it

Basically, is anything that happened in the poets life shown in the poem? That'd be contextual influences. Protagonists are the main narrators in a poem, story etc and subject matter is pretty self explanatory, it's what the poem is about.
So you should talk about how the poet's life may have affected themes and feelings in the poem, how the main speaker of the poem may be significant and how the subject matter relates to the poet.
I haven't personally read the poem or studied the author so this is about as much help as I can give though I hope this at least helps a little.
