    It would help if you could narrow it down for us. Which civil war do you mean, because, obviously footwear during the Roman Civil Wars would be very different to footwear during the Spanish Civil War.

    I take it that you mean the English Civil War, then they would have worn large buckled shoes, much like the Pilgrim Father's shoes from the Mayflower.

    Leather shoes/boots. In the military they were called Brogans.
