Are these modifications on an SKS good/legal in CA?
I think that for my first gun I want to get an SKS. I'll be turning 18 soon, and I have been firing guns with my dad for a while. I want to use it for target shooting and home defense. My budget is kind of low, which is why I want to get an SKS.
The problem is that I live in California, and it's famous for extremely restrictive gun laws. I want to have an SKS with:
A rail system
Collapsable stock
pistol grip
Are these modifications good/legal? I might want to get an optic and flashlight too.I also want to keep it's original 10 round internal magazine.
Also where can I get an SKS in the first place?

In CA, where I own my SKS, the fact that the SKS has a fixed 10 round magazine helps it escape from a number of issues otherwise.
As far as the rail system goes, no problem.
I'm pretty sure you are OK with the collapsible stock.
It's that pistol grip that might cause you a problem. California really frowns on pistol grips and that would likely make it illegal.
A wonderful place to ask questions about this, and also to find SKS's for sale, is at Calguns.net. Go into the forums, and you'll see a section marked Private Firearms Sales. There's always a few SKS's for sale. And you can also ask questions in other forms about exactly what is legal and not.
You'll have to register for free to ask questions.
PS.... Jack of All Trades gave a bunch of bad info. I bought a Norinco earlier this year for $325. Big 5 Sporting Goods was selling Yugo SKSs, complete with bayonet, for $399. AK's are far more expensive in CA than SKS's are.

it costs more to get a CA legal SKS than it is to get a CA legal AK.
a CA legal SKS at the cheapest I've seen runs you about $450. the best and cheapest, a Norinco SKS, is not legal in California any longer (due to some stupid BS in 1996), so you have the choice of a collectible Yugo SKS or a Russian SKS. Yugo's start at $450, Russians start at about $550.
generally the median price range is around $500 for any kind of SKS rifle.
you can get a nice wasr-10 AKM for about $550 to $600.
the modifications you want are legal in CA, so long as the rifle does not have a detachable magazine it can never be a "evil black rifle".
SKS rifles are a bit hard to find, especially find it cheap. browse gun stores, look around ,ask around, calguns, online, armslist, etc.

its like a craigslist but it's about guns & ammo and gun stuff.
Source(s): California resident, bought a Norinco SKS for $275 from a local gunstore, lost it some time later at a gunsmith shop because some cops rolled in and took it away. the Norinco SKS does not violate any of the laws but somehow its illegal. I replaced that with a wasr-10 AKM rifle. since then I have seen a dramatic increase in SKS prices. from $300 for a new issue Yugo to $600 for similar condition Yugo. - ?Lv 44 years ago
i might %. it up for that, the ammunition is properly worth virtually what all of it expenses. the reasonably-priced place i will purchase 7.65x39 ammunition, 1900 rounds might fee me $347.05 plus transport. @ invoice. i assume some human beings think of 18 cents a around is airborne dirt and dust low priced, yet a youthful fellow procuring his first firearm that sounds notably severe priced, whilst in comparison with 550 rounds of .22 long rifles at Wal-Mart for $15, 25, or 2 cents each and each. Oh and 7.62x39 isn't evaluate handgun ammunition, and we right here in Texas purchase this variety of ammunition from extra low fee than airborne dirt and dust, and it is not unlawful.

Any gun shop will have one, or can get one. You can not have a folding stock, well it has to be secured so it can not fold.
