My Only Regret... (Comment / Critique)?

I maybe am as confused as others regardin what you state is a regret, but more I wonder the reference of an 18 year old civilian havin a gun,,,unless gun is a metaphor for guilt or some such?

No offense to you at all, or your friends, 18 is a chrological thing, not strictly a maturity thing and most countries send those who might still be considered "Children", off to war.

My family buried a 19 year old Marine, who I'm sure had other plans.

I can tell your heart is in the right place, but is there any question to the poem? Your only regret is? Not going to war?

Too, some of it just does not see plausible, and with this subject matter there is no joking around. Example first three lines....you just turned 18, got your degree, line 3 "Or put a gun in my hand" If that was the case I would have like you to explain why, at such a young age, you would want to end your life. There is a story there to be told if that be the case.

IMO you have a story to be told, just some lines to be omitted or modified.
