How do you get over your past?
Growing up, my family was very poor and stressed. My parents used to yell and beat (yes beat) my brother and me. My Dad drank a lot, and lost his temper quite a bit. He used to use his belt as punishment and throw us across the room. My own brother, my one family member that faced the same struggles, once snapped and came at me with a butcher knife. I had to lock myself in the bathroom, while he repeatedly stabbed the door and screamed how he hated me and everyone. Admittedly, he had it a bit worse than me because he got into trouble all the time, had ADHD, and always copped an attitude with our parents. (I was the quiet one).
This is just a quick highlight, and my family isn't like that anymore (THANK GOD!), and while all this had happened and very much so affected me and my brother, I forgave them and love them all very much.
But my past has scarred me, and I have a really hard time trusting people and letting them get close. Most days I don't think on it, or let it affect me at all, but sometimes life throws me for a loop, and everything comes back to haunt me.

It will never go away. You have to accept that it happened and things are better now, and thats just the way it goes. But it will always be there, it is part of you. It made you who you are today.

I had a similar past and what I did to help me through it all was simple.
I realized that my past is a wind against my back, pushing me forward and that my future is a blueprint.
Never look back in regret, always look back and use that vision to improve your life ahead of you.
Having hangups over your past will always lead to regret for something you could not control.
Your past is also what makes you and makes you a better person because you will do your best to never be like your parents who drank and were violent to their children.
Hope it helps a little bit! :)

You're never going to get over it, and your past will never magically be erased.
You have to have the courage to forgive and forget, because holding a grudge holds you in the past.
