How do I tell my boss I'm quitting?

Okay, so I might not exactly be quitting, but there's a chance of it.

Basically, I've been working at a drugstore for almost 2 years now. I'm only 19 years old, and I'm looking for something that I can enjoy and grow with more.

So, I applied at a local Sephora.

Now, I just applied, and I have not quit my current job. If I don't get the job or a call from Sephora, I'm going to stay at the drugstore.

But assuming I DO get a call from Sephora, how do I go about telling my current boss that I'm quitting? I hate disappointing people. I know it's going to be better for me in the long run working somewhere else that I'll enjoy a lot more, but I'm just afraid of them maybe getting upset and giving me a bad reputation or something?

Of course I feel that my chances of actually getting hired at Sephora may be slim, so there's a chance I might not even have to have this conversation with my boss yet.

But just a few tips would definitely help me in this situation.

Relax. Your boss is used to people moving on to other jobs. He won't have any problem handling it.

First, don't say anything until you actually get a new job. It's the kiss of death to say you're "thinking of leaving", as you haven't got a new job, but your status has changed big time at your old job.

Second, when you do get another job, simply give the required notice (probably two weeks) to your boss. Say you've enjoyed your time with the company, but you've found a better opportunity. Keep it short and simple.

The only time you can get a bad reputation is if you leave without sufficient notice. If you follow the notice requirements, your reputation will remain intact.

Tell your boss that you would like to put in notice. At least two weeks is prefered. Stress that you have enjoyed your time working for the company but you have found a better job. And don't worry, industries that hire primarily young adults expect a lot of turn over. 2 years is a pretty long time. And make sure that sephora will work with your current schedule restraints if you have any, and you won't work less hours.

Just tell them your giving them your 2 week notice. It is a courtesy to do so. They may even try to negotiate a higher pay in an effort to keep you. It's all business and never personal so don't feel bad.

Give them 2 weeks notice, and let your boss know how working there had been a good influence and experience for you
