How does pre-ordering an item actually work?

My question refers to pre-ordering an item online. Let's say a highly anticipated CD or video game comes out on October 11th, 2011. You pre-order it online a couple of months prior.... Does the CD/game ship out on Oct. 11th or is that the day you get it in the mail (depending on holidays/weekends)? I heard you actually get it that day in the mail, but this doesn't seems all that plausible given mail delivery isn't exactly dead-on. I've never pre-ordered online and was just curious to how it worked.

Update:

Raymond, I'm reffering to ordering it online and having it shipped to your house.

Here is an example from experience:

I pre-ordered a music-CD online. They charged me on my Debit card now, so when the CD becomes available though distribution they will ship a copy to my house and I will recieve it a few days after original release date. Depending on the mail-carrier, you should have it between 3-5 days.

i believe that stores are allowed to mail out on the last business day preceeding the release date, assuming that they have received their allotment. so you might get it on the release date if you are located in the same mail region. Some items are so hyped that delivery to the stores is not until the actual release date.

When you go tho the store you preored it from they will have a copy waiting there just for you so it will garentte you get the game same day it comes out. just dont forget the phone number you gave them!
