I agree that you lose a dollar for every 2 dollars you earn, over a certain amount, which $85 sounds right to me (but I am on SSDI, not SSI).

I know a lot of disabled folks, and most manage their money very poorly - cannot distinguish needs from wants. This makes their poverty even more difficult to bear. The folks I know get stuck in cell phone contracts, or rent to own, or payday loans, or get too many pets, or do not know how to cook from scratch, so they pay much more for frozen convenience foods etc.

Read up on some financial advice blogs. Now, much of that advice is for people with higher incomes, who are investing for retirement, and you will have to skip over all that. But places like Consumer Reports Money magazine, there are many tips in there that can help low income people too, rip off warnings. You can get that magazine at your library and it is well worth reading. You have to be a financial expert, to live on so little money, so please invest some time in learning to squeeze each nickel as hard as you can. My brother is on SSI, and he does very well because he manages money so well. I am disabled also, but on SSDI and I am married, so income is not as tight for me as for him.

If all you can get for part time work is a minimum wage job, then it might be more cost effective for you to spend more time getting your grocery bills pared to the bone , by doing more food prep, having a garden, if possible, stuff like that. Sometimes, it is not even realistic for a disabled person to work part time - you might break yourself down trying, and just be a wreck. depends on what kind of work you can find.

    all the best to you

A SSI check is not designed to cover the costs of raising a family. It is designed to be a welfare payment for one that is at poverty level. I cannot imagine how you could begin to raise 5 kids on it. I think you must be on SSDI.

If you are on SSDI you could pursue getting vocational rehabilitation service and use a Ticket to Work and work considerably more than part-time and possibly get off benefits all together.

Social Security has a "Ticket to Work" program to help ease people back into the workforce from receiving disability payments. Your benefits are not reduced unless you make substantial gainful employment earnings above a certain amount. I believe it is currently between $800 to $1000 per month. You would need to check with Social Security directly to see if you qualify.

If you are receiving SSI, that is income related. If you make too much, you will lose it. You will also want to talk to your case worker to see if it would affect other benefits such as food stamps and Medicaid. There is no way to get the correct information on all this from a forum like this. I have found the people at Social Security are very friendly and helpful when I have needed information. Since you are likely to be receiving state assistance, too, you need to ask there as well. A lot of people are in your situation, so they should know how best to help you. Good luck!

Your SSI would go down each month. Depending on how how you earn it will go down.SSI is a welfare based program.
