Helix (cartilage) piercing removal?

I was recently stupid enough to get a left helix piercing (basically I'm living on my own for the first time, no parental supervision, you probably catch my drift). After a few nights with no sleep I finally decided to take it out and the relief is incredible! My question is, what measures should I take to ensure that I don't get an infection and that it closes up completely?

It's going to close up if there's no jewelry in it. If you leave it out for a few hours, it might not close completely, but you're going to have to PUSH it through again and it WILL bleed.

All that does it aggravate the piercing site and leave room for infection.

As for avoiding infection. Cleaning it twice a day. Every day.
