Who makes a good rucksack/backpack?
I was going to replace my old Berghaus rucksack with a new one but read some reviews saying that Berghaus quality has really dropped recently.
I had a Berghaus Dart 25 and would like something similar.
Does anyone have any recommendations? I want 20-30l capacity but would also like to know what brands are considered to be of high quality.
Thanks!

Gregory is worth a look. I looked into them after hearing them referred to as ''the cadillac of packs''. Mine has served me well, tough yet comfortable and convienant. Gregorypacks.com

It really depends on where you're at and what you're planning on doing. I've got an OLD external frame backpack made by remington that's outstanding quality, but i also use the Outdoor Products brand that walmart carries simply because it's never failed on me and i didn't have to pay an arm and a leg for it. That's the one I take on day hikes or if i'm just staying one night. North Face is a great backpack, actually outstanding, but a lot of big brands like that, you're paying for the name. Do some research and find out what you think will be good for you, then take it out and see if that's what you need or what that one's missing. You'll learn something new about your gear every time you go out. I'm pretty content with my cheap walmart pack, but also when that's not enough, i break out the remington pack which truly is an outstanding pack. Hope this helps!

Hi from the cold wet windy hail-ridden Isle of Man...yup, we got hail today and a freezing north wind.
Never mind, summer is only 9 months away...maybe.
Berghaus still do some very fine packs. They also do some cheaper ones which are OK but not great.
The other top brands are Vango- Karrimor- Osprey- Lowe Alpine and Nomad. Some of the Karrimor bags. like the Berghaus, are OK for the money but not the best.
North Face has some good ones and a load of high street fashion rubbish for thousands of schoolkids who go for the name so NF is cashing in on their schoolkid fame with shoddy high priced fashion stuff to carry school books.
For a really good day pack that will carry granite for years without wearing out go for a decent price Vango or Karrimor .
You'll be lucky to find a Nomad unless you have a Tiso store close to you which means you live in Glasgow or Edinburgh.
You'll see plenty of those Vango and Karrimor bags on Everest, and plenty of Berghaus, but a little bit bigger than 20 litres....just a bit.
I have 30L and 65L Vango bags, a 75LKarrimor and a 50L Nomad.
Nomad is a Dutch company now mostly a travel company with a good travel website but their packs and tents have been used by mission workers for years.
It's very high quality stuff. The packs are very close weave to keep out insects, ideal stuff for mission work in Africa and India for example, and they are very hardwearing.
The tents are mighty expensive but they are dream tents for long stays in harsh environments. They are getting very hard to find though since the company changed course. There are none available though their outlet store and there is now only a small selection of packs.

All of my packs have given a lot of years of good service and I expect them to see my days out in better condition than I'll be in..

You should head for a dedicated outdoor gear shop. Compare customer reviews on-line.
I am actively using only two packs: my daypack is a Columbia Mobex XL that fits inside my Go Lite Terrono 70 L overnight pack. I also have a smaller Osprey Atmos 50 L, but never use it anymore because it just did not hold enough gear for the variable climate demands of the mountains.

Down here in Cornwall you can get those bags In a shop called trago but I'm not sure that there a nationwide shop, other than that it might b worth trying a camp supplies shop or possibly eBay?

North Face has various rucksack backer-packs.... ive seen them go for as low as $40 and as high as $100+.... Filson is another outdoor gear company... They make excellent quality goods... ive seen backer-packs go for as much as $160 on up to $300+.... Gortex and/or Denier Nylon. If you can write this question, you can shop around on line and find someone in your location for exactly what you need... I wouldn't doubt it!
