What makes a person smart or stupid?

IQ tests measure 'general intelligence', which is a combination of a number of different abilities including verbal reasoning, abstract reasoning, spatial awareness, memory and mathematical aptitude. However, there's no objective basis upon which to determine the relative weighting of these different components. Also it's difficult to measure intelligence directly, and tests invariably rely to some extent on a person's knowledge as an indication of their intelligence.

Basically an IQ score is a measure of how well you can do on a test, relative to other people. It's a little arbitrary, and it's very easily misunderstood. But in the sense that a person with a higher IQ will tend to be more intelligent than a person with a lower IQ, I suppose you could say it's accurate.

As for what actually 'makes' a person smart or stupid, it's a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Psychologists have estimated the genetic component at between 50% and 70%, for what that's worth.

A smart person is an individual who can think many solutions to a problem. The IQ does not accurately describes a person's intelligence. A person's intelligence is all situational . Would a scrawny straight A student get away clean from a confrontation of a gang ?

Intelligence is the ability to gather, process and use information effectively.

There are different types of intelligence, like social intelligence, physical intelligence or something like Logical intelligence.

IQ tests usually only measure Logical Intelligence. The ability to gather and process written, spacial and mathematical information.

A person is smart or stupid in that sense probably due to genetic factors (Though I think it's less important.) and early childhood brain function. Like how they were learned to rationalize at a young age.

In the end though, intelligence can only be measured by statistical performance, or results.

i don't think IQ test accurately shows intelligence. u can have all the book learning in the world and be considered smart , but without common sense u can still be considered stupid. case in point, take my girlfriend , collage grad. ton of book learning and smart. love her but she has no common sense at all. sometimes she is clueless ( at times she could be called stupid ) but to your point i think they do have a number on the IQ test if u test lower than that number they stupid ( probably not that word )

We all have the gene! Sometimes the 'smart' gene displays, sometimes the 'stupid' gene!

I guess that would depend on the eye of the beholder; the time, the perspective, the context, the definitions of 'smart' and 'stupid...

ALL such values are in the eye of the beholder, Perspective!

An iq test is an accurate measure of intelligence. Most people get the words knowledgeable, smart, and intelligent confused. Intelligence cannot be changed, how knowledgeable a person is can be changed, and how smart someone is, is a combination of intelligence and knowledge.

to me,

a stupid person is one who

refuses to learn

when the opportunity presents itself.

'IQ' is properly defined as

"that which IQ tests measure"

and while it can be a useful indicator,

it alone is not very useful

in determining 'intelligence'

Smart people listen more and talk less.

Stupid people talk more and listen less.

Stupid is anybody who stops pursuing knowledge.

Smart is someone who continuously betters themself.

Nobody is stupid.

There is only intelligence and ignorance.

Ignorance is "choosing to ignore."
