What stopped Liverpool FC from continuing their dominance in England?

Many people blamed it on Graeme Souness but I think its unfair to blame it on one man especially since he won the F.A Cup with Liverpool and is a legend. Even though Liverpool has some great players in the 90's like Mcmanaman, Fowler, Barnes and Rush still played and they were part of the great team of the 80's. I know many people will answer this with Manchester United but Liverpool were able to overcome other great teams during their era of dominance so how did Man Utd come outta the blue and suddenly became the top team in England?

Update:

I agree er.. Superman, That was a top squad which they built up and they've done well to hold onto top spot even after most of those players left or retired

Update 2:

If West Ham kept hold of their youth then they would have had an amazing team for sure

February 1991 - Kenny Dalglish resigns as manager of Liverpool Football Club.

him leaving made it x10 easier for Fergie to win a title for the poor sods who went 26 years without winning one themselves.

The funny thing is United fans make up their own legacies - ' we knocked Liverpool off their perch '

    really ?

is that why between 86 and 90 Fergie couldn't win the league whilst Kenny was in charge at Pool ?

once Kenny left - the balance of power became even between a few clubs - Fergie was smart enough to grab that oppertunity with both hands and finally, make United the new club in English footie to beat - not referring to the 92/93 season , the one after it.

in the 93/94 season it soon became apparent times had changed and that Man United were the talk of the town - tehy were the boys to beat. 92/93 was anyones league , Villa and Norwich blew it big time and United capitalised.

Had our stupid board got on the phone and asked King Kenny 'um...hi, er would you like your old job back ? ' 6 months after he resigned or something - or even after he won the epl title with B'burn.....guess what.

The King would have returned to his Kingdom and true fortress.

We suffered 20 years of b0llox cos we didnt bring him back at the club sooner.

imo - the damage has been done, the scum are going to win their 20th this season and Its going to take King Kenny at least 3 or 4 seasons before he has a squad able to seriously wrestle for the title away from the super three.

Did Fergie ever win the title when Dalglish managed the club from game 1 to 38 in the top flight ?

nope - but he probably will this season for the first time ever.

Kenny won the title with a newly promoted club in Blackburn Rovers - took that 94/95 title from Bacon Face - nm the titles he won with us as player, player-manager and then manager lol

LASTLY - would United have stopped our dominance or interrupted it regardless of whether Kenny had stayed put or not ? Haven given this serious thought - and out of respect I believe so yes.

during the 26 year title-drought they never stopped being our equals as giant of English football, many argued then and might do today - that Manchester United were always the biggest club in England in more ways than one than Liverpool FC were.

before my own loyal reds hang me for treason/blasphemy ( lol ... : )) ...i wish to complete my fecking sentence ) know this, that they were always the darlings of English football before we were.

look at the bigger picture - its just a game, everybody wants a piece of the action and a slice of the cake - we had it all back in he 70s and 80s and they had it all in the 90s and noughties lol

both clubs are well run big clubs with a massive history - of success.

this is why - and by no surprise the fans understand the meaning behind this fixture be it played at Anfield or Old trafford.

our job , fans of both clubs is to not misinform the masses with b/s and twisted factless b0llox - rather, our job is to tell it like it is ! ^_^

    5 times Champions of Europe ! yeeeaah ! :-D

There is no doubt that England would start as clear favorites to win the Ashes this time. They are playing without KP presently & their batting would be strengthened on his return. They have a great bowling unit, which is better than their batting unit. On the other hand Australia's bowling department is better than its own & perhaps England's batting line up as well. Only Swann could make a difference but he didn't do much against N.Z. in the first Test. Also it goes in Australia's favor that they are the clear underdogs & whatever they win, would be an added bonus. Having seen their strong spirit, they will never give up without a fight. Which is where they score heavily, always. Count them in even this Ashes.. BQ: England are far from being the invincible, they have won after a big gap in India & haven't dominated like W.I. & Aus, when they were at their peak and winning home & away, with equal ease.

The changes were subtle but the influences of the Liverpool true blood started to disappear when the money take overs were placed on the board, this in turn brought fast changes, no disrespect holier for instance was one who had great ideas but the time of these changes were not at the right time.

Liverpool should of kept with Benitez a real gentleman, but now King Kenny will bring stable advancement in local coaching and local up and coming footballers.

The wheels came off the bandwagon

It's hard to argue with Bad though and I'm no NBU; It has mostly been the youth system over the years but let's look at 88/89

    1 Jim Leighton

    2 Viv Anderson

    3 Clayton Blackmore

    4 Steve Bruce

    5 Mal Donaghy

    6 Mike Duxbury

    7 Colin Gibson

    8 Lee Martin

    9 Paul McGrath

    10 Russell Beardsmore

    11 Deiniol Graham

    12 Ralph Milne

    13 Liam O'Brien

    14 Jesper Olsen

    15 Bryan Robson

    16 Lee Sharpe

    17 Gordon Strachan

    18 Norman Whiteside

    19 David Wilson

    20 Alan Brazil

    21 Peter Davenport

    22 Mark Hughes

    23 Giuliani Maiorana

    24 Brian McClair

    25 Mark Robins

Not many youth products there, and look at the size of the 1st team squad. Bigger than the rest?

they failed realy to capitalise on the massive financial potential available when football suddenly became all about money at the start of the Premiership era.

A naive boardroom that didn't realise the money making potential there - and that money would be available to purchase the best players but also to keep the best homegrown players - those who site the United Academy as evidence that they haven't "bought" their success fail to take into account the huge wages that United have historically paid in order to keep their best players (and the youth players they have bought) with the team. United's huge ground and massive media darlingship enabled them to capitalise more on their earning potential and become pre-eminent.

Mainly because of the millions of pounds United had to spend at that time no one could match the money spent.

    lol @ 4th answer Where's Eric Cantona & Kanchelskis.

If Sharp was so good why was he shipped off to Leeds?.

I sense something fishy? do fans know anything about there own history ha ha ha!

I think your question has touched a nerve with some fans...............oh wait i mean armchair pundits..........or should that be cyber pundits glued to their computer 24/7?.

I agree with bad. every great team needs a local back bone. Gary Nev and Scholes would die for United. i like how SAF makes a team out of English speakers (mostly English) Liverpool will do the same. it will take time. but Liverpool and United will be the top 2 teams bu 2015. and City and Chelsea will be far behid. what happends when their millionj airs simply get bored?
