Why do my boxwood's turn brown?
Each time that I trim my Boxwood hedge, the cut ends turn brown. It looks terrible. What am I doing wrong. I have seen beautiful boxwood hedges bordering houses and would love to have that lush green look. The plants of mine are not new. They are thirty years old.
I live in the northwest USA.

First, there are several types of box wood. Knowing what kind you have would help you evaluate your problem.
Boxwood foliage color may become orange, yellowish, or reddish-brown in the if exposed to winter sun, frequent frost, and wind. Bronzing can be significantly reduced or avoided by planting in a shaded site protected from harsh winds. An alternative is to provide protection from winter wind and sun by using a wind break or cover. Plants under stress due to low pH, low fertility, or drought are more likely to develop winter bronzing. Bronzing can also be caused by nematode infestations. Bronzing will not kill the plant but can reduce the plants overall attractiveness. New foliage in the spring should develop normal green color. Do not shear boxwood in late summer since this might force new growth that will not harden before frost.
Boxwoods usually require some pruning in spring to remove any branches that may have been winter killed. Also, as plants get older, some of the older branches may be removed so that light can penetrate to the inner shoots. Continuous shading of the inner branches results in foliage drop from those shoots thereby decreasing plant value.

Never fertilizer a plant under stress. You might call a professional to find out what is wrong with your boxwood and then address the problem.
