What do people achieve by Geocaching?

What do you achieve by doing anything? It's just good-natured fun. You get to explore areas you wouldn't normally explore and help establish a sense of community with others.

It's fun (and it's not particularly new). It's good exercise, and it's a bit of a competition as well. My son's been doing it for at least ten years with a stand-alone GPS unit; I went along on a few of them. You get to see interesting places that are off the beaten path most of the time. It's also a good way to teach map-reading skills, with a "reward" at the end, rather than just ending up in someplace.

It helps if you're in an interesting area (as opposed to someplace flat and boring; he got started when we were living in Colorado, so he had the entire Rocky Mountain range to play in.

What do you achieve by playing most video games, most TV shows? Nothing. It's the same thing, it's just for fun.
