Usually it is higher end, custom or unique jewelry that is handmade or of higher quality. I've seen alot of designer jewelry that is associated with birthstones and gems for necklaces, bracelets, rings etc. Hope this helps...

The term is mostly used for unique, well made, rather expensive jewelry and stands in opposition to mass produced low quality pieces.

Tiffanys really isn't designer jewelry any more. There are heaps of people producing designs and the pieces are definitely mass produced.

For real designer jewelry, where the designer actually hand-makes his own jewelry, you are best off to check out places like www.etsy.com or go to individual designers (Wedunit Jewels).
