Do any atheists believe in magic?

Just curious, because they seem to not just deny God/Gods, but also the whole idea of supernatural shenanigans.

That entirely depends on what you mean by magic.

If you mean awe and wonder, then sure.

If you mean something supernatural, then no.

For example, if you conceptualize psychicism as magic, then I would disagree with you. Sherlock Holmes was intuitive and observant and could easily have been considered a psychic.

I'm an atheist. I am on the fence about supernatural stuff. I definitely don't believe in ESP or the like, but I'm not sure if ghosts exist or if there is an afterlife. Maybe reincarnation. It's just as plausible to believe what all the major religions believe about the afterlife without there being god(s). I believe in alien life form--not humanoids or even animals--but trees & bushes & plants. I sometimes think that alot of things weatherwise may be happening because the spiritworld is affecting it. Like a hurricane may be because the spirits are upset or want to cut down the population a little. But then sometimes I think spirits are just hooey.

All the word "atheism" means is not having a belief in deity. So views regarding any other practice are simply beyond the scope of the definition. Having said that...

Most do not, but yes I've know a few who do. Even then, a lot of it depends on how you define "magic".

Illusions, yes. Magic like in Harry Potter? No.

Some do. Most don't. The only thing all atheists agree on is that there are no gods. Everything else varies.

While I do love magic shows, it's more the "we know you know we're tricking you" magic of Penn and Teller than the "look at me, I am a superhero" magic that David Blain spawned.

"Magic" is a pretty broad term. I believe in "magical thinking"--that by altering your perception you can alter the world around you.

I don't believe in the supernatural, though

Magic is the manipulation of energy. We manipulate energy all the time. Magic just does not use mechanical help.

I like watching magicians, but I know that what I'm seeing is a clever illusion.
