Garage Door Spring Repairs?

The tension spring for my garage door broke, and I read on various sites to hire someone to repair it. How much should I expect to pay for such a repair?

Cable type springs, (one on each side), cost about $20 each and are easy to install. A home visit from a repair person would likely be about $100 to $150.

Torsion springs, (running above the door side to side), are a different story. The springs cost about $100 per side and are quite difficult to install. I'd expect about a $350 to $500 charge for this repair.

I just had this done on my door. I only had one spring on there. I was advise that I needed two due to weight of door. While I really did not agree seeing I have has only 1 spring on there for 15 years. I figure these guys were shoot me straight. Anyway, I was quoted for 1 spring 125 bucks. I ended up paying 210 for two springs if this helps. Just be advised that they will try an up sell you on rollers, track cables, bolts, ect. I just had they do the springs, and yes the recommendation of two the door is not grunting when it goes up, HA so they were right. Im pretty ballzy and there is no way in heck I would attempt to do this myself.

  • There are a few reasons why a garage door torsion spring may break. Most often, it is just from wear and tear. Just think about how many times your garage door is opened and closed everyday. Do not attempt to replace the spring yourself as it is dangerous. The cost to replace torsion springs from allohiogaragedoors.com is $175.00. This includes parts, labor and tax.

$100.00 bill will usually take care of this.. Keep calling until you find someone that'll do it for this price.

It is a fairly easy job for a experienced garage door company, but not for a home owner. I don't recommend a home owner making this repair.

The secret for making those springs last is to spray them once a month with WD40/

Keeps the coils slippery so as not to rub together dry as that causes the rupture of the coils

Springs and cables installed will run $300 to $500. DYI with http://www.springs4garagedoors.com/ They have a video and the winding bars to install them yourself. The hardest part is getting the correct measurement for your springs. Call them up and they will walk you through it and save about 60% if you have some basic hand tools.

I hate to write this and don't take it the wrong way, but just hire a Mexican. He will get it done right for a fair price.
