Christians, Is there any virtue in the natural man?

The Bible would tell us "no", however our most popular theology seems to indicate otherwise: "we are saved through our faith in Christ and his finished work on the cross".

Is the decision to "accept Christ" or to "seek God" not then a virtue? Is it not a "good" choice that the natural man makes prior to salvation?

Update:

Mouse - This questions is geared toward Christians. Christians do not believe that man is naturally good.

Update 2:

Omega - Please reread the question. You've provided answer to a question that I've not asked.

Update 3:

Mark - Thanks. What about the verse "There is none that doeth good and sinneth not"? This verse is clear that we can do no good thing? Isn't seeking God is a good thing?

I guess the point I am considering is this: If we can do no good, then it is not us that has chosen Christ, but Christ that has chosen us. He has caused us to seek him, he has given us faith, he has done everything. My point is this, natural man has no virtue, he can do nothing but sin, so how can he even seek God. Is it not God that seeks us?

John 6:37 All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out.

John 6:44 No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day.

People can seek "god" in that they can seek to know something about the supernatural, but the Bible says that no one can come to Christ unless God the Father draws them.

Romans 9:10 Not only that, but Rebekah's children had one and the same father, our father Isaac. 11 Yet, before the twins were born or had done anything good or bad--in order that God's purpose in election might stand: 12 not by works but by him who calls--she was told, "The older will serve the younger." 13 Just as it is written: "Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated." 14 What then shall we say? Is God unjust? Not at all! 15 For he says to Moses, "I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion." 16 It does not, therefore, depend on man's desire or effort, but on God's mercy.

Ephesians 1:3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. 4 For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love 5 he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will-- 6 to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves.

Ephesians 2:1 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. 3 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath.

4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions--it is by grace you have been saved. 6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, 7 in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.

8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-- 9 not by works, so that no one can boast.

Man is inherently sinful. This means that there is NOTHING VIRTUOUS about man! "For all have sinned." We can do nothing to save ourselves. Your quote "we are saved through our faith in Christ and his finished work on the cross". has to do with our salvation. We are saved by our faith. This faith was completed by the sacrifice of Christ on the cross.

The seeking of God is virtuous. And yes when you accept Christ as your savior, the Holy Spirit resides in you. HOWEVER, this in no way makes us virtuous. The virtue of seeking God does NOT make one virtuous, it is just a good thing to do. We still have sin. Virtue and sin are mutually exclusive. The only one virtuous is the One without sin- God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit.

Sure the natural man can have virtue! And making a ‘good choice’ is a virtuous. But that isn’t enough.

Supposed you’ve been diagnosed with an illness; simply knowing about your disease isn’t the same as actually going to all your appointments, taking your medication and any treatment provided, and following strict Doctor’s orders on diet, exercise, etc. The same applies to virtue. Virtue is not a passive avoidance of what is bad. It has moral power. A virtuous person has goodness. “Virtue,” says one professor “needs to be learned with the heart as well as the head.” Cultivating virtue, then, entails more than a thorough acquaintance with God’s Word. It calls for meditation on what is written there so that our hearts get filled with gratitude for Him and we are moved to apply Scriptural principles in our lives, every day on every aspect.

A spiritual man with virtue means not just believing in Jesus as the means of God’s salvation, it means living in accordance to God’s upright standards – which get lost in the influx of modern, religionist, political, and othrodox Christian ideals.

The most outstanding example of virtue is God himself. He always acts in a virtuous way and does what is righteous and good. We can cultivate virtue by becoming “imitators of God.” (Ephesians 5:1) And God’s Son, Jesus Christ, ‘left us a model for us to follow his steps closely.’ (1 Peter 2:21) Moreover, the Bible contains accounts of many faithful individuals, such as Abraham, Sarah, Joseph, Ruth, Job, and Daniel and his three Hebrew companions.

    It's about sin.

And natural man is naturally sinful.

It's sin that's the problem in this world and it what causes the separation between God and man.

But through the blood of Jesus we can be saved if we believe in him and do the one true and living God's will though him.
