Are there any christians out there who believe in evolution?

I used to be a christian, but I deconverted and now consider myself an atheist, because I no longer believe that god exists.

But when I WAS a christian, I believed that evolution was simply god's way of creating the world, and I didn't have a problem with it.

I still love the mystery and wonder of science. It had nothing to do with my deconversion.

Are there any christians out there who share this love of science? Because I think this could be a beautiful common ground for both christians and atheists.

Do not let the small groups of Atheists and Creationists make you believe that you have to choose between God and humanity's ongoing discovery of God's Creation through Science. This is not true.

Truth cannot contradict Truth. -- Pope Leo XIII

Most Jews and Christians do not take the stories of creation in the Bible literally. We believe the stories included in first 11 chapters of Genesis tell religious truth but not necessarily historical fact.

One of the religious truths is that God created everything and declared all was good.

Catholics can believe in the theories of the big bang or evolution or both or neither.

On August 12, 1950 Pope Pius XII said in his encyclical Humani generis:

The Teaching Authority of the Church does not forbid that, in conformity with the present state of human sciences and sacred theology, research and discussions, on the part of men experienced in both fields, take place with regard to the doctrine of evolution, in as far as it inquires into the origin of the human body as coming from pre-existent and living matter - for the Catholic faith obliges us to hold that souls are immediately created by God.

Here is the complete encyclical: http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/pius_xii/encycli...

And here is the Address of Pope John Paul II to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences on October 22, 1996 speaking of the Theory of Evolution: http://www.newadvent.org/library/docs_jp02tc.htm

Here is an interesting article about Pope John Paul II's opinion in the matter: http://www.americamagazine.org/content/article.cfm...

The Church supports science in the discovery of God's creation. At this time, the big bang and evolution are the most logical scientific explanations.

As long as we believe that God started the whole thing, both the Bible and responsible modern science can live in harmony.

Here is a nice list of Christian thinkers in science: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Christian_thi...

The Clergy Letter Project an open letter endorsing the Theory of Evolution signed by over 12,000 clergy from many different Christian denominations: http://www.butler.edu/clergyproject/rel_evol_sun.h...

The guy that found out that dinosaurs are warm blooded was a pentecostal he is in the theistic evolution camp that believes evolution is a tool that God used. Robert T Bakker. But I cannot agree on atheism. When I study the things around the world I see orders, complexity and relationships.....which leads to the arguments of philosophy the teleological argument or intelligent Design. I have a ordinary B.A. from York university 3 years of study in Psychology..........I was bombarded with atheism......Ironically if you know christian history that was when the Toronto blessing was Going on, those days I have seen God work miracles. But hear is the thing as you know and this is way atheism just does not float my boat. Germany in WW2 tried to eliminate christianity, Nietzsche's philosophy of the superman predominated nazis thought. Which was taught in schools at the time in Germany. This atheistic and evolutionist thought was carried over to the superiority of the master race, and the extermination of 6 million jews and other peoples. Dietrich

Bonhoeffer (A Lutheran pastor) and Corrie Ten Boom (A Christian) resisted the nazis or aided in helping jews escape. Their sense of higher law....point blank Gods Law superseded the evil laws of the Nazis Government. We can talk about Marx to Stalin in russia. I have studied psychology and it has taught me that humans can be greatly deceived into behaving badly and manipulated if the circumstances are right. That is why I cannot agree that atheism and Christianity cannot co-exist. If man turns from God he will exterminate himself. Prophecy in the book of revelation proves this, you just have to read the bible and watch the news. I love philosophy, Science and theology......but most important I love my God. Yes you can have a love of science and still be a christian (Look up christian thinkers on wikipedia and you have every one from Sir Issac Newton to Jennifer Wiseman of NASA). I ask that you reconsider your stance on atheism. Your older and sometimes foolish brother in Christ Frank Mitchell.....or A.K.A my pen name Doctor Who.

There are those who have come to terms with both philosophies (Christianity and Evolution) but don't believe for one moment that you'll find as an atheist any meaningful common ground with a Christian. It's pretty much like trying to find common ground between pro-lifers and pro-abortionists.

When I considered myself Christian I thought God made evolution happen. There's too much evidence for evolution to ignore it.

@Orac- I'm with you for the age of the earth. I was only Christian because I had it pounded into my head for 16 years. Then I started realizing the flaws in the bible and formed my own opinions.

Yes I believe in evolution and I believe that it was God who set things in motion. Our world is rich with creatures and living things no man could ever fathom to be. There is so much life here so very much and there are always new and fascinating creatures being discovered that we never imagined before. Truly our world is bountiful and it increases in it's beauty every day.

Well, I think it's a compromise on the religion itself, and a sign of a growing secularisation of society. I mean even the Catholic Church accepts Evolution. It's a crack in a religion that makes no sense.

    I'm sorry, I don't agree :p

I'm atheist now as well, but when I was Christian I accepted evolution as the way to explain life's diversity. I also accepted the model of Cosmology that shows the earth is 4.6 billion years old and the universe is 13.7 billion years old.

    Is There a CREATOR?

    Whom Should You Believe?

“Of course, every house is constructed by someone, but he that constructed all things is God.”—HEBREWS 3:4.

DO YOU agree with the logic of this Bible writer? Mankind has experienced some 2,000 years of scientific advancement since that verse was penned. Does anyone still think that the design evident in nature requires belief in a Designer, a Creator—God?

Even in industrialized countries many people would say yes. In the United States, for example, a survey conducted by Newsweek magazine in 2005 found that 80 percent of people “believe that God created the universe.” Is this belief due to a lack of education? Well, do any scientists believe in God? The science journal Nature reported in 1997 that almost 40 percent of biologists, physicists, and mathematicians surveyed believe in a God who not only exists but also listens to and answers prayers.

I accept evolution as the most plausible way we have a diverse range of life on Earth, given the evidence accumulated thus far.

I believe that God is evolution. God is in everything.
