Looking to learn new networking topics?

Im currently going to school for my computer networking degree. I have taken a few cisco router classes. I would love to learn general networking concepts and other things.

Im talking about things like telnet, port forwarding, ethical hacking type things, scripting etc.

Im not trying to "hack".. Im trying to learn about the systems used, and common topics that i will need to know for my career.

Any links, or things that i will need to know will be appreciated.

I don't know what you would have learned from cisco, but get a understanding of the HTTP, TCP/IP, UDP, BGP, ARP, etc these are the protocols behind the web.

I would also recommend learning about the OSI Model, it's not actually used but it's great for understanding.

I would recommend setting up a shell account, shellmix.com does a limited account for free, you can SSH in and have a play with ping and traceroute etc. Better yet get a UNIX system of your own.

If you know an programming language such as JAVA look up sockets in the API and see if you can make two PCs talk to each other, a simple chat client/server or something.

There is heaps of other stuff worth learning about like NAT and proxies, just do some googling on the different terms, there is a lot of information out there! If you want give hackthissite.org a go, I'm not sure how useful it is but it is fun, and will introduce you to a few terms, it is more about exploiting web applications rather than learning about actual networks.

    Have fun :)
