Is this behavior odd?
I come from a very loving family. My grandparents and parents hugged and showed us lots of attention and affection. When I got married I could sense my in-laws didn't believe in showing affection and they seemed cold and emotionless. When I had kids they never seemed to want to hold or hug them. When they got to be toddlers and school age my father-in-law would shake their hands and say see ya buddy at goodbyes. I found this strange. Is it me?? Why would someone feel it is wrong to hug their grandchild? Why do they think showing affection is wrong?

idk, but i had a set of grandparents that were exactly like that and a set that were exactly the opposite. it's strange, i know. but when your children grow older, your in-laws are not going to have any of your children's affection, so it'll be their loss.
were they like that to your husband when he was a kid? maybe they're just that way.
either way, sounds like your children will gravitate towards your side of the family, so that's good.

What you describe is quite common, and not wrong. They show affection differently, that's all. Get over it!
