I Knew A Soldier Once. Care to Read?

"I Knew A Soldier Once"

It was a crazy time, nineteen seventy three

we were all surviving cause

we thought the love was "free"

every one of us had long hair

trailing down our backs

drugs for recreational fun

not involving tracks

we believed it would last forever

those carefree times back then

didn't realize it was temporary as

the times were always a changin'

the music was instrumental in it's

lasting affect upon our souls

I fell in love with a soldier when

he came home from Viet Nam

his tortured soul cried out at night with

memories to vile to repeat

my love unable to comfort him

as he fought to go to sleep

he lost the ability to share his heart

with others it was clear

so we parted our ways and

I pray to this day that

his soul has finally found peace

Update:

I write in my natural speaking voice and use words I ordinarily would. I do have a tendency to write fast and off the cuff which some people may not like and I agree that this may have been better with work. I am not a pretentious person and am not out to impress anyone. I write for my own enjoyment and hopefully others will get something out of what I write too. Thanks for all the answers, I do appreciate them.

Forgive me if I play around with your poem, I am in rhymie mode today.

"I Knew A Handsome Soldier Once"

I knew a handsome soldier once

    those crazy times in '73;

we were fighting for great causes

in the days when love was free.

    Everyone had long hair

    trailing down our tie-dyed backs

    drugs were recreational

    without withdrawal, or tracks.

    We thought they'd last forever

    those carefree times back then

who knew it was so temp'ry as

    the times were always changin'

    the music was instrumental

in its effect upon our souls

I fell in love with a soldier when

from Viet Nam he came home.

A tortured soul cried out at night

    His vile memories repeat

my love unable to comfort him

as he fought the jungles of sleep.

He could not truly share his heart

with me,  but to this day,

I pray his soul has found some peace,

    Though we have parted ways.

I knew a handsome soldier once

    those crazy times in '73;

in the days of fighting for great causes

when we thought that love was free.

Does any largescale government care approximately its troops. Im helpful there are some politicians, generals, and leaders interior the government that extremely provide a dam relating to the troops yet ninety% of the goverment basically seems on the hassle-free soldier as a gadget, a physique that they are in a position to apply to fufill their targets whether reliable or evil. consequently i think of 70% of the British government extremely did care relating to the troops interior the trenches. The warfare interior the trenches hit the united kingdom very confusing and over a million million youthful British adult adult males had parished just about 7% of all British adult adult males interior the British mainland. the human beings needed thier sons decrease back comparable to what happens interior the U. S. with Iraq. After 4 years of misery the British human beings have been uninterested. They demanded their politicians end the warfare no count what the end result. the extreme compelled compelled Britian to place extra rigidity on Germany and end the warfare swifter.

Oh, so many could not handle the terrible emotional wounds from Viet Nam. I know my Dad, who was in WWII would have periods where his sanity was tested. Even years later, he still could not talk about it. I think your poem is a wonderful tribute to prayer for a wounded hero. Wonderful piece, this is ! You have honored him with your memory and sorrow for his pain.

There's not much depth. Almost as though the writer has summarized a time and a place just to write something.

Everything sad comes with a price.Love is never free.

It may kill you as fast as a war can.The music though,

    usually brings peace.More music,,less war?

    Very nice poem.Although heartbreaking.

    Thanks bye
