How do you talk to your cat?

I have always talked to our cats as though they were part of the family. My son tells me I should just speak in commands.

I talk to my cats in a very soft voice like they are babies and they just love that. I always tell them how beautiful they are. I ask them what they want and to come and see Mommy, stuff like that and when they are lying down, I will sing to them. Sometimes they fall asleep:)

Everyone in my family refers to the cats as if they were a species of human intellect that can understand English speech. If one of us is bored, we'll "translate" what the cat is saying. I notice members of my family raising their vocal pitch, as if they were cooing over a baby. If we speak to one in an authoritative tone, they tend to ignore us; so we rarely speak as if we are giving them a command.

I think your son is wrong. Speak to a cat softly and in a loving way while petting him/her where they like it most. Cats respond to kindness, not harshness. They will do almost anything when given this treatment.

as if they are human, unless there being sickeningly cute, then i put on a baby voice, the type that i hear other people do and cringe lol, and tell them just how adorable they are. mine tend to talk back though (im not crazy i mean meowing lol or nom nom while eating > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bkTC3GLAg_o )
