The War of 1812 began in 1812; hence the name. It was fought between the US and Britain over land disputes and British impressment of Americans into their military.

War of 1812 lasted from 1812 to 1814. It was between USA and Britain. It started when USA thought they could easily conquer the British lands in North America (i.e. Canada) due to Britian being busy fighting Napoleon and France. Turned out it was not as easy as they thought. Canadian (British) Generals enlisted the aid of some Indian tribes under Tecumseh to help them.
The war went back and forth over time, with it essentially being a draw (no winner). The final battle, New Orleans, was fought weeks after the peace treaty was signed in Europe; the word had not gotten to North America in time.
