my 8 month old chihuahua is starting to chew on the wood in the house?
from the coffee table legs to the floor boards ( which have an oill based paint on them ) and im worried he will get sick not to mention the damage he could do while im gone.
has anyone else had to deal with this and if so what did you do to deter that behavior ? i was thinking of wiping a thin layer of vicks to try and stop him.
he has lots of chew toys, you would think i had a toddler in my house the way he gets them all over the living room so i dont know how it could be boredom. i think there used to be a dog in this house before and even though i diligently washed down everything upon moving in he seems to be able to smell it.

A friend of mine has two chihuahuas. She was experiencing the same problem and then it got worse, one of them decided to start digging up and chewing on the carpet to get to the base boards. Her solution was to buy a nice big crate for her girls, put down a baby blanket she purchased just for them and include plenty of chew toys along with food and water dishes that attach to the cage (so they can't be flipped over). There was an adjustment period of about a week or so but now the girls think of the crate as their safe place, their little sanctuary, if you will.
It beats risking your baby boy getting sick from whatever the wood is treated by. I certainly wouldn't advise putting vicks on your furniture because not only will it damage the wood but if it does not deter him and he ingests it, it will make him really sick.

6 months he's still a puppy and he will chew on things. I got my dog at 5 months and for the first few months he was perfect not chewing on anything - then all of a sudden he started chewing up his bedding, rugs, slippers, drapery ties, etc. then he got to be about 1 year old and stopped. I kept reprimanding him when he would chew things but it didn't stop immediately. He will grow out of it but you need to reprimand him when he does something wrong or inappropriate. as far as the wires go, what I did for that was buy some pvc piping from the plumbing department at Home Depot. I cut it to the lengths I needed and put the wires through it so he couldn't chew on them. Of course he went to something else to chew like the throw rugs or my slippers, but at least he couldn't electrocute himself.

Confine to a crate when you are not home to "deter" the chewing or keep him in a pen, when and if you catch him in the act of chewing the legs, say AH AH loudly and sharply and give hiim something acceptable to chew on such as a rawhide little bone or a nyla bone this way you redirect his behavior to one that is acceptable, praise him when he chews on the rawhide. At 9-12 months dogs get in their rear molars, he's chewing because he's teething.
If you are not home and you insist on leaving him out to wander spray surfaces with Listerine, bitter apple doesn't work.
Good luck

It's the owner that needs to learn how to train the dog, so sending it away to be trained means it will work for the trainer, but when it gets home the owner will probably do everything wrong and the dog will not respond correctly. Learn how to train your dog obedience https://tr.im/am6Cw
Part of the fun in having a well trained dog is learning to train it correctly yourself. That is also the most rewarding. Some people send dogs away for specialist training, like sheep herding, protection work or gundog training, but even then, that is the lazy way out and good trainers do their own training to get what they want from their own dogs.
However it is always more productive to train your dog under a good instructor, especially if you are not experienced

Crate the dog, or confine him to a small area where he can't get to anything to chew. Give the dog some toys (kongs) to chew on to help with the boredom.

They make a bitter spray that they sell in stores for that, it might help, but my sisters 6 month old german shepherd likes the taste of it and still chewed on the wood...
If you rotate the dogs toys daily, he wont get bored of those toys its like new toys every day, thats what she found worked for her dog.

Yes I have experienced this with my Chi. All I have to do is firmly tell her to LEAVE IT, then I give her something appropriate that she is allowed to chew, like a mini rubber ball, or squeeky toy. It's called training, and even teeny tiny breeds need to learn the rules of the household.

Spray the surfaces with bitter apple. It will deter him from chewing. You also need to train your dog diligently, maybe removal training would work. You can try to use vicks but then won't you have a bunch of slick/greasy surfaces?

When you see them begin to chew, correct him in a low firm voice "no chew" (don't yell as that will only scare him) and then redirect him to something a chew toy (one with a squeaker will be perfect because that will keep his attention)
