Should Christmas holidays be renamed 'the Winter Holidays'?

I think so, since this is a secular country and we shouldn't be recognizing holidays associated with a single religion (i.e., Christianity).

Thing is: Christmas celebrates the birth of Christ, but the holiday was appropriated from the pagan Roman holiday of Saturnalia after the Roman Empire adopted Christianity as its official state religion following Constantine's vision during the Battle of Milvian Bridge and subsequent conversion in 312 CE. So, the roots of Christmas are actually pagan in origin.

Although we celebrate Christmas on December 25, Jesus bar-Joseph was likely born sometime in April. Christmas has been celebrated as a Christian holiday on December 25, but the holiday has been secularized during the 19th and 20th centuries so that while it is ostensibly a Christian holiday, it's quite arguably a secular holiday and hence everybody, Christian and non-Christian alike, celebrates the holiday.

My partner and I have friends who are Hindu, Muslim, Jewish and pagan, and the way we celebrate the holidays is to celebrate Diwali (Hindu), Eid al-Fitr (Muslim), Hanukkah *and* the Winter Solstice - and while he and I celebrate Christmas as primarily a religious holiday, we have our largest dinner of the year on New Year's Day where we invite our friends for our largest dinner of the year which usually runs 12 courses. (We're usually finished with the leftovers somewhere around January 8!)

To the "Christians" who told the questioner to go to Hell, go to Iran, and became so defensive (and so hostile) - what do you think Jesus would have done? Condemned the questioner to a fiery, burning Hell, or treated him with compassion and invited him to dinner? I really don't care about your piety or your blustering: show me your Christianity *in action*, viz. your compassion and restraining the need to attack.

In a free country, people are allowed to celebrate however they choose, say Merry Christmas if that's what they feel, and worship as they see fit.

Renaming something is to imply you can force people to say "happer Winter Holidays". The thought of it is laughable.

No, its Christmas. You don't want to recognize the holiday, fine. But don't think for a moment that i will support such foolishness

It fit the facts because it is generally accepted that Christ was born in the spring not the winter. However; at this point it is to late.

No, I don't get you lefties overwhelming need to ensure no one is offended when it comes to ANYTHING... Fck sake someone will be offended regardless so how about we stick to tradition and tell the offended to stfu for a change instead of making the majority change to appease the minority.

Your WINTER HOLIDAY would not happen if it wasn't for the birth of my Savior. And there would be no WINTER BREAK for school/college kids. There would be no SPRING BREAK (what we used to call Easter vacation) if it wasn't for the DEATH AND RESURRECTION of my Savior.

Put your money where your mouth is. DEMAND to work on Christmas and Easter for REGULAR pay. Oh, you wouldn't want to do that. Figures. All mouth and no do.

So, quit yer bellyachin and put a sock in it.
