Why is a one way ticket more expensive?

I am moving from the USA to Europe next spring and was shopping one way airline tickets. I was stunned to see them all going for roughly 2000 dollars. Yet, if I shopped for round trip tickets, they go for roughly 700 dollars.. My question is in two parts, first, WHY? Second, can I not just buy a round trip ticket, and then not use the return trip component?

Thanks in Advance for all helpful responses.

Update:

Go to any travel site, and book a trip from DC to Amsterdam, 1 way in February.

Then do it round trip, with a return say a week out. I am pretty proficient at booking online, I know how to book!

Why? No clue, but one way tickets aren't THAT expensive. Are you sure you're not accidentally viewing refundable economy or first/business classes?

Yes you can ditch the return portion of the ticket if you don't plan on using it.

There's also the part about international 1 way tickets and getting into a country and staying there illegally.
