Midwife is a nurse specialised in care during pregnancy, delivery and during the post partum period. A L&D nurse will assist a midwife or doctor during labour and deliver at a hospital.

    There are several categories.

She could be a certified nurse-midwife or CNM; most of these work in hospitals. They not only take care of women in labour, but can also manage the delivery on their own, without a doctor.

She might be a hospital labour & delivery nurse; as hospital staff, they take care of women in labour, check dilation etc., and assist the OB at the delivery.

If she is assisting a birth in a birthing centre or at home, she might be a nurse-midwife.

If she is assisting in the role of labour coach, she could be a nurse who is also a monitrice or a doula - they are very similar, but a monitrice is usually considered more of a medical professional and entitled to perform more medical functions, like taking blood pressure and checking dilation, while a doula assists mostly with keeping the labouring woman comfortable and helping her cope with contractions.
