  • Is placing yourself last in a list of people a grammar rule or an etiquette rule? Does it apply to animals?

For example, I am supposed to say "he and I" rather than "I and he," or "John, Mary and I" in any list of people. What if I am listing myself among animals or inanimate objects? Do I have to say "my dog and I" or can I say "I and my dog"? Is it a matter of politeness in placing other people first, in which case I wouldn't have to follow that rule if I were listing my dog; or is it a rule of grammar, that would apply even if it were "my luggage and me"?

  • Is there another word for "hot" food?

Food that is not hot in temperature but causes a burning sensation, such as hot peppers, is called "hot." Is there another word that describes such food more specifically? If not in English, is there a word in any other language that has this exact meaning? Does "piccante" have this meaning, or does it only mean spicy or tasty?

  • How do atheists feel about folk religions or cultural traditions of a spiritual nature?

I'm asking for civil answers, please! The question is not meant to incite rage.

Do any of you, as atheists, feel differently about what might be called "folk" religions as opposed to "revealed" religions? Do they annoy you equally?

For example, Hinduism, which is a genuine religion but is also a huge part of Indian culture. A person of Indian descent who had to give up all aspects of religion would have to give up most of his cultural background as well. The same goes for traditional Native American spiritual beliefs, the traditional beliefs and practices of most tribal societies, and arguably for Judaism as well.

Do you make a distinction? Why or why not?

  • Why do bra size calculators disagree about my size?

I fed my measurements into five different online calculators and was given different sizes, including three that would be much, much too small for me. How do I get an accurate sizing?

  • No name, no avatar, can't post comments. What's up?

My name was replaced by a question mark. No matter how often I replace it with my screen name, I just get the "?"

Now my avatar has disappeared as well.

I can't post comments on any Yahoo site, either.

This has been going on for many months. Is something wrong with Yahoo, or with me?

  • What do Americans think of foreign news media?

There seems to be an ongoing feud in the U.S. between viewers of supposedly right wing news programming, and viewers of supposedly left wing news. Both are accused of extreme bias, unfair "spin," and even outright lies, and people are categorized politically by what news they watch.

I was wondering what the view is of foreign news media: the BBC, CBC, Australian and other English language TV networks, foreign public television or radio, etc. - especially in their coverage of U.S. news.

Are they considered part of the right wing agenda, the left wing agenda, or other? Or are they considered to be apart from, or irrelevant to, the entire conflict? (Or do Americans not take any notice of foreign news sources?)

  • Is the word Holocaust used to refer to all victims of the Nazis, or only specific ones?

Does Holocaust apply to all people put into concentration camps, etc., even if they survived, or only those who were killed? Does it refer to Jewish victims only, or to all of them?

(Note: I am only asking how the word is used. I am NOT looking for input on the Holocaust itself, especially not from historical revisionists. That's why I chose this category instead of History or Politics.)

  • What's up with my Yahoo account?

    Two things happened at once:

    1) My screen name on Yahoo Answers was replaced with a question mark (I know that happens occasionally, but mine has been this way for months, and continues even when I replace the name through Edit Preferences).

    2) I can't leave comments or ratings on Yahoo News any more.

Any idea what's going on, or how I can fix it?

  • "Special" dog food from the vet: any real difference?

My standard dachshund has some digestive issues, and is on medication which controls it. I have been feeding her Orijen dry food for several years. The vet says she should be on special food for dogs with gastric problems, either Hill's or MediCal, which are sold only through veterinary clinics. It's very expensive, and I wonder how much difference there really is between this food, and any high-quality dog food I can buy at a pet supply store. I suspect veterinarians may be inclined to recommend these foods because they stand to profit from their sale, so they may not be completely unbiased. Can anyone point me to a good, objective source of information?

  • What's the deal with pantyhose?

Fashion experts on television keep jeering at women who are still wearing pantyhose. They are being sold in shops as much as ever, it seems to me, so a lot of people are still buying them. Are they really passe? If so, what are women wearing instead? Am I really supposed to put shoes directly on my bare feet? That would be uncomfortable for walking, and would get the shoes all sweaty. Are other kinds of stockings considered equally unfashionable? What about yourself - what do you wear with skirts?

  • Isn't there a better word than prioritize?

I just don't like the word 'prioritize.' I don't know if it's a made up word, but it sounds like one. However, there doesn't seem to be another English word that means quite the same thing. Any suggestions?

  • Can you explain American opposition to universal health care?

I'm Canadian. We've had free, publicly supported health care for decades. It's one of our most widely endorsed institutions. Having a system like this, if it's at all possible, seems like a no-brainer to me. I honestly can't understand U.S. opposition to the idea. I've never heard an explanation that seems to make sense.

Can you explain it to me in a way I can understand? Why are many Americans so violently opposed to the concept? Why is it considered a bad thing? What do they think will happen if it is established?

  • Has the word "Christian" replaced "Protestant"?

I often hear "Christian" used in situations where the writer/speaker obviously means Protestant - for example, Catholic and Christian. I have only heard this from American sources. Has Protestant been replaced by Christian in the U.S.? If so, what do you now use as a word for what used to be called Christian, ie: all religions based on Jesus, including Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox, Coptic, etc.?

  • Who reads Archie comics?

When I was young - many years ago now - Archie was aimed at teenaged readers. Now I still see Archie comics for sale in grocery store checkouts and discount stores, but I can't imagine who is buying them. They're too old for small children, teenagers wouldn't give them a second look, and I'm pretty sure the old people who used to read them decades ago aren't still interested. Who on earth is reading them?
