How do I delete songs from my iPhone?

I deleted a very large number of songs from my iTunes LIBRARY (1000+ songs) and I never want to see them again. For some reason they are still in my [user]>music>iTunes>iTunes music folder.

When iTunes prompted me to "keep file" or "move to trash", I selected the latter and then emptied my trash. The songs no longer show up in my library, but I can't the library on my iPhone to mirror the one on my computer. The iPhone library keeps all of the stupid songs I don't want. I have read that you can do the manual control and uncheck the songs that you don't want, but there is no way in hell that I am going to do that for over 1000 songs.

Update:

I have 1000s of songs I want to keep, so the whole checking of things is not really an option. I already put several hours into deleting them from the library, and I want that work to be reflected on my iPhone library.

Update 2:

******THE CORRECT ANSWER******

Ok so none of the answers below were of any use to me. I figured it out though, just so people who happen to find this thread can get some help.

So the iTunes library is just a collection of pointers that point to a folder in [user]>music>iTunes>iTunes music folder. When I was deleting songs, it was not deleting them from that folder, so my iPhone still recognized that the songs were on the computer and kept putting them back on. What you can do is get an external hard drive. Go to iTunes and drag over your entire library to the external drive. Then delete everything both in your iTunes library and in [user]>music>iTunes>iTunes music folder. Plug in your iPhone and let it wipe your library clean. Then replug in your hard drive and recopy all of those songs. Plug in your iPhone and let it sync. Voila!
