DVD crashes in regular player, but runs smoothly on PS3. Any idea why?
I tried to play the Harry Potter 7.1 dvd but it froze when it's supposed to go to the country selection screen. So I put it in my PS3 and it ran fine. I tried another dvd in my regular dvd player and it ran fine. The extras dvd of HP started to run fine, but then froze every time it was supposed to go back to the main menu after each feature. Again no problem with the PS3. So, are some new dvd's not compatible with older dvd players?

This is a problem that sometimes happens and the most likely cause is how the DVD was made.
For example, I have recently been watching the DVD's of British comedy series Red Dwarf. The episodes play fine on my XBOX 360, but when it comes to selecting Special Features, it is impossible to navigate because the menu plays a small video clip that wont let you select a menu item whilst it is running. After it stops you have about a second to select what you want before the video clip plays again. However, I pop it into a regular DVD player and it works fine.
It's just bad DVD design, with the creators not testing thoroughly enough over different player formats.
There is another reason why this may happen. It's all to do with the lasers used to read the data on the disk.
Usually the lasers in consoles are much higher quality than those found in regular DVD players. It may be that the laser in your DVD player is not good enough to read this particular manufacturer's disk. It could also be that the disk itself is of a particularly low quality, and vice versa, it could be that the DVD is of superior high quality and that's the reason the laser wont read it.
It is really hard to figure out this problem, the only thing I can suggest is to try and find someone who has the exact same model of DVD player that you have, and see if it work's on that. Then try to find someone who has a DVD player made by the same manufacturer and try that. If it manages to play on a DVD player by the same manufacturer, but doe's not play on the exact model that you have, then I would say it is a problem with the laser that was used when your DVD player was manufactured.
Hope this helps.

I'd say as long as you have a player that DOES play the DVD, you're not bad off.
As for why your regular DVD player doesn't work sometimes when your PS3 one does, it might be that the PS3 unit is a much better unit and/or that your regular DVD player may be on it's last legs.
Good luck.

Some DVD players are more finicky than others.
