Is my neighbor hacking my computer?

Hi, and thanks for your time and feedback...

Off the top of my head, I've had 'weird' goings-on with my computer. During the time period in question (1-2 months?), two new apartment families have moved into the building.

One weird thing is that Every time I start up my computer and get things going, the neighbor across the hall starting stomping around.

Another weird thing is that since maybe the day before yesterday, there's a cable strung across the 'community hallway' - from this new neighbor's to that new neighbor's. It's my understanding through the grapevine these neighbors are friends.

The third weird thing is that a number of times a day, Norton puts a message at the bottom corner of the screen; something about high usage from Internet Explorer.

I hope somebody can help put two-and-two together about this weirdness Thanks again.

Most likely, they are sharing their internet connection...Also, more than likely, they are using it for high bandwidth activities....

So, when you turn on your internet, they probably start lagging, and thus start getting upset...

If you're afraid of someone using YOUR internet, you can check your network map....Norton usually has a network map, where you can see the attached computers to YOUR particular network....

Most likely though is that that particular building doesn't have high bandwidth, and so when multiple people are using the internet, the speed slows down significantly...

I would suggest switching to AT&T from cable or to cable from AT&T if it worries you....

It could just be a coincedence, and the cable could possibly be them sharing internet or something like that.

The warning you get from Norton about the high usage is because internet explorer kind of sucks and takes a lot of memory.

If you're really worried, download another anti virus like AVG or Macfree and have it do a scan, it should be able to tell you if there is anything on your computer that would allow them to get into your system.

Another possibility of course is that they are just piggy backing on your internet connection. Perhaps it slows down for them when you get one, hence the stomping around.

Do you've evidence? if so record him to the police as hacking is unlawful. it really is what you should have achieved first. Are you particular its not some virus or trojan? a number of those might want to nicely be fantastically nasty. You factor out firewalls and an epidemic scanner (of so you might purely have on AV and one firewall) yet you're making no factor out of undercover agent ware, spyware and malware secure practices. Do you've any of those? Are your domicile windows updates contemporary? If he's hacking in: he's perchance getting access to both via telnet or some port that you've open. Its confusing to say precisely how he's doing it. i'd disable telnet yet that signifies that you'll get no distant assistance both.

Password your network connection ( all computer around the network range will need to know the password before connection is allowed)

Butt in the range ( signal should not go beyond your living room)

Get rid of your wireless router, you are not smart enough to use it, and it is now causing you problems.
