Can any recommend a crossbow for home defense/ survival weapon?

First, let me say i would prefer a shotgun but it is currently not a option. What is a crossbow that would be effective for an HD situation?

Update:

A gun isn't an OPTION at this time.

Update 2:

It isn't going to be beat to hell or anything either.

Update 3:

Alright, a regular bow maybe?

You should go to the archery range and see if you can try out a few bolt-slingers and see which one you can pierce a silhouette reliably with. I'd recommend practicing quick reloads, and look into affixing a bayonet onto that sucker.

If you're unable to possess a gun, I'd also recommend a dog with a strong bark that reacts to the slightest noise.

For home defense i wouldn't use a crossbow. Takes a long time to reload...even longer than a break action shotgun. I wouldn't use a bow of any type for home defense especially in close quarters. One with a compound bow or long bow you still have to draw the arrow far back and in tight places its not a wise choice. The draw on a compound bow for full size adult is around 24-30" maybe even a bit more.

Baseball bat, 9 iron golf club, tire iron, long crow bar, knives or metal darts would be good too. Or you could do what some do with nailers...buy yourself a battery nail gun and break the safeties in it. Normally...well i wouldn't call it normal or even safe in that matter but they do it so they can get jobs done faster but you can still hurt yourself. At any rate you could use that as i guess another option. Probably go with like 1 1/2-2" nails.

If you really have to improvise the nailer would have to suffice.

If you had too choose a crossbow that can be use for self defense, giving that you cannot use a fire arm or any other sort of weapon. I would either go with a Barnett ghost 400, Pse Tac 15i or Excalibur Vortex. All those are crossbows that can be reliable and effective with one shot. Although you are limited to one shot and one shot only you will need to make it count. To reload the fastest one will probably be a Excalibur Vortex out of the three. But thats just my personal opinion. This is only because you cannot shoot a firearm.

If a firearm is not an option, I would choose a cap and ball revolver, which is not classified as a firearm by the ATF, over any crossbow. At least with that you have six shots before it's out of action because it can't be reloaded fast enough. If even a cap and ball revolver is out, a baseball bat would be better than a crossbow.

One a crossbow is unweildy in confined spaces and very slow to reload especially if you get one that has a decent amount of power. While a shot from any hunting crossbow would kill a human with a broadhead affixed to the bolt, if you face an armed intruder and miss with your one shot, you are in deep $hit.

The inflation, unemployment and falling value of dollar are the main concern for our Government but authorities are just sleeping, they don’t want to face the fact. I start getting more concern about my future as well as my family after watching the response of our Government for the people that affected by hurricane Katrina.

I cannot in good continence recommend something that may cost you your life someday.

A bow or crossbow is to cubersome, to slow to reload, and to slow to kill a determined humane being.

I would recommend a large rock or baseball bat before I recommended archery equipment.

Follow up shots from a crossbow are pretty slow. It's better than nothing I guess. But recommend one? Nah.

whichever one u can shoot accurately........since ur limiting ureself to a ONE SHOT ....weapon......

** if u are a felon would suggest moving to a state that allows felons to possess weapons after certain amount of time..........

or getting a cap'n ball revolver 6 shots beats 1 every day of the week.....not to mention the noise will make most idiots run....

** btw if ur on parole/probation even the crossbow is ILLEGAL....
