Dummy .50 BMG headstamp info?
I have a Dummy .50 BMG round. Three holes drilled in case. Head stamp reads "F A 4". I know FA means Frankford Arsenal but does anyone know what the 4 means? links would be great too.
Whoa, no kidding? I didn't think it was that old. It's in real good shape for 1944. I couldn't find a link or any info. Just wow I own a WWII era .50 BMG dummy round. Thanks mike.
Mike- My round appears to be brass [maybe brass coated] is that normal or what?
Nope, I was wrong. My case is magnetic so it might be steel with cadmium coating. Mine is in great shape with very very minor pitting.
I also read during WWII only the Frankford Arsenal and Winchester made .50 BMG. Which explains the single digit year code on my cartridge. I had read FA always used two digit year codes. Since it was war years and they were one of two makers of .50 BMG and the only GOGO [Government Owned, Government Operated] maker that really explains the single digit year code.

That's the date stamp for 1944.
--I have a few dummies with the FA 4 headstamp too that I inherited from my grandfather. Here's the only link I could find. https://www.libertytreecollectors.com/productcart/...
--- From what I've read, the brass casing was originally plated with cadmium. Its possible its been worn off over the years. Mine are a little worn but you can still see a hint of cadmium coloring on the surface.
