US only place with 2 political parties?
Is the united states the only country with 2 political parties? Do you think that helps or hurts our progress, since both parties have different agendas?

No, it only looks like the US has two political parties. In reality the United States has only one political party that masquerades as two political parties with different agendas. In reality Republican and Democrat are just different sides of the same coin.
Here is how it works. Most humans have two hemispheres of the brain. Each hemisphere processes information in different ways, and there is a tendency for people to process information using their dominant side (right or left). Just as people tend to process information using their dominant side, peoples world view tend to be shaped by their dominant side. Here is how the two psuedo-parties take advantage.
1. Divisive social issues: The Republicans and Democrats take dimetrically opposed positions several divisive social issues where the public is about evenly divided. About half the public will side with the Republicans, and half with the Democrats. By carefully selecting these issues, in many cases a person will find they agree with the same party's stance on several if not all of these social issues. This locks up about 1/3 of the vote - people who vote primarily issues.
2. Values Identification: Not all people are issues voters, there are some who are more pragmatic and can look beyond divisive social issues and vote based on the notion of common values. The Left side of the brain thinks in terms of symbols, idealism whereas the Right side of the brain tends to like things to be more concrete, traditional etc. So the Democratic platform leans towards symbolism while the Republican leans towards "traditional" values. This locks up another 1/3 of the vote - people who vote values.
Using this strategy, the Party - with it's two faces effectively locks up about 60% of the votes. Which means, in most contests one of the two faces will always get elected and the party will remain in power. There are a few rare instances where independents have had enough agreement to elect a third party or independent candidate but this is a rare and very localized. Locking up the vote, ballot access rules, and good old "your throwing away your vote" has succeeded in locking out any 'third party' getting anywhere in the process.
But lets look at what has happened with these "different agendas" The right is at the throat of the left, the left is a the throat of the right and by and large neither moves forward with their stated agendas.
Welfare reform was a big win for the right, right? Not really because as welfare reform was enacted, SSI and other federal programs for the poor expanded and at the end of the day nothing has really changed, by the time somebody exhausts their 5 year limit they will be picked up on some other federal program for the poor and can continue this cycle of generations being on welfare.
Partial Birth abortion ban, now there is a win for the Pro-life agenda right? Not really as it turns out there really were no partial birth abortions being performed in the US to any real degree, It was actually China that was doing that to any degree and even in China it was rare.
Ban on Assault weapons - there is a win for the Left - not really because it like many other laws had a sunset clause and expired with virtually no notice by the congress or the media.
Where is there progress?
Patriot act - passed and reauthorized overwhelmingly with both parties in power.
Funding for the wars - passed and re-passed overwhelmingly with both parties in power.
Bail of of Banks and wall street - pass and passed again overwhelmingly with both parties in power.
NAFTA - Signed by a Republican Administration (GHW Bush) Final negotiations and final ratification completed by a Democrat administration (WJ Clinton)
PTNR with China, A waiver was passed by the Congress under a Democrat administration. Every year between 1989 and 1999, legislation was introduced in Congress to disapprove the President's waiver and regardless of a Republican or Democrat congress being in power the resolution failed by a large margin.
The party has an agenda, and is moving forward with it's agenda. The pseudo-parties have their show agendas which never really go anywhere.. The average US Citizen is pretty much clueless!
