Is drug testing welfare recipients justified?

I am participating in a debate and I would like to know everyone's opinions on drug testing welfare recipients. Do you feel that it is justified? What do you consider welfare?

No, the expense alone makes it unjustified. Overhaul the way welfare is paid instead.

The best way to get those people to stop spending welfare money on drugs is not to give them money, but instead pay rent & utilities directly the way HUD housing payments are made, give vouchers once a year for clothing, and go back to old fashioned commodities programs instead of food stamps.

Give them beans and rice and cheese and powdered milk instead of an EBT card. Give them a job instead of a check, make them work if they are able.

If you have Rick Scott in mind, keep in mind he's one of the most corrupt politicians anywhere, any time. Scott makes the assumption that many, if not most, people on welfare are drug abusers - as do many conservatives. The reality is that drug users are only a tiny minority. Scott's program is more costly to the taxpayer than is the actual fraud.

It is not justified when a governor stands to gain financially from an initiative started by that governor himself. It's a conflict of interest.

I support testing new drugs on welfare recipients. It's a fair exchange: the government gives welfare recipients money, Americans get to find out the benefits or drawbacks of new pharmaceuticals...plus, animal testing is just cruel.

NO. No data backs up any claim that "welfare" recipients do drugs at a higher rate than the general population.

More than likely UNconstitutional anyways. I think we already had a federal court rule on a diiferent state' law years ago.

Funny how NO republicans are suggesting we drug test ALL executives at each and every company that gets government money.

Hell, Bush even rescinded a Clinton-era executive order that barred companies who broke environmental and labor laws from getting gov contracts.

Apparently not...Rick Scott (R) of Florida is doing it and it is now costing tax payers money because 95% of welfare recipients tested negatively. BTW his wife owns the company that does the drug testing.

The people who are employed and provide the tax dollars for welfare must be drug tested. Why shouldn't those who benefit from those tax dollars be drug tested to receive them?

Yes its justifiable considering how much welfare fraud is going on. Not everyone on it but probably 75% of them are capable of working and using it as a scapegoat.

of course not.. Its a waste of time, money and there is absolutely no evidence to back up the claim that people on welfare are on drugs..

Republicans make stuff up all the time, like this, like WMD, like trickle down economics, and the rest of the herd just blindly follow and repeat

Yes. They are asking for taxpayer funded benefits. Because this country is in such dire financial straits, we need to find ways to weed out those who are inappropriately receiving those benefits.
