What's the pronunciation of the word "herb" in the UK?

In the U.S. we say "erb"...

I'm watching Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares, and he said "herb," pronouncing the H.

Is that correct?

Update:

((((Seals))))

I love your explanation of different pronunciations; I can actually hear them. :)

Also, it's "a hotel" in American English, not "an hotel." For the most part, "an" is only used before words that start with a vowel... "an owl" vs "a howl"

    Depends where yer from.

A lot of Scots say herrrb with a rolled "r" and the "e" the same as the first "e" in "elephant".

A man from Yorkshire may well say "erb"

A woman from Wales may say "huurb".

    Hope that helps.

PS - the "h" sound is very soft in all English, that's why words that begin with "h" are preceded with "an" and not "a". eg "an hotel".

EDIT - "Brits say the 'h'". Only some. Cockneys and people from Yorkshire/ Lancashire certainly don't.

EDIT - ((((((((Lyss))))))))) happy to help! :-)

The correct pronunciation in British English is as Gordon Ramsay says it. I think the erb pronunciation in American English is a corruption of the French l'herbe.

Americans seem to hate a breathed h. Most of the time they ignore, sometimes they switch to a stronger f.

The British do it both ways, depending on which accent you're claiming. It's a bit absurd to say "British" accent, as if there is a single one for all of Britain. A country much smaller than the US, but which has more local accents than it. You'll find most people who claim this are the products of upper class schools, who merely see their own accent, and by extension the accent of the elite dominated BBC, as the "British" one. Much as people see the Midwestern accent in the US as "normal" because it dominated broadcasting for so long.

Americans don't say the H... Brits say the H. Why we decided not to say the H is a mystery
